Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, not only dreamed for himself, but he also dreamed for the country. APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Kalam’s childhood was spent in the house of a fisherman. He was the youngest among his siblings. He had a deep love for studies. Being an average student, he was considered a very promising and hardworking student.

He used to give a lot of time to the subject of mathematics, physics was also included as his favourite subject. Along with this, he also sent a newspaper to reduce the financial burden on the family.

St. Stephen’s College, Trichirapalli where Kalam obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physics. After this, in 1955, he enrolled in IIT Madras for Aerospace Engineering. Here he impressed his teachers and missed out on achieving his dream of becoming a fighter pilot with very close marks. His rank came ninth while only 8 people were to be selected.

Kalam took a bachelor’s degree in Physics from St. Stephen’s College, Tiruchirapalli. After this, in 1955, he enrolled in IIT Madras for Aerospace Engineering. Here he impressed his teachers and missed out on achieving his dream of becoming a fighter pilot with very close marks. His rank came ninth while only 8 people were to be selected.

Kalam was not disappointed, he always kept saying that if you fail, do not be disappointed, because failure means ‘First Attempt In Learning.’ Kalam did not stop here, he followed his new dream.

After completing his studies at IIT Madras, he became a member of the Defense Research and Development Service and became a scientist in the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), India, after which he never looked back. In 1969, he joined the Indian Space Research Institute, ISRO for a long time.

Missile Man of India

APJ Abdul Kalam is known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ because of his contributions to the advancement of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam managed a programme that produced many successful missiles when he returned to the DRDO in 1982.

But even after a big achievement, his humanity won the hearts of people. He was the Defense Adviser to the Prime Minister who made a big contribution to the success of the Pokhran 2 nuclear test.

He had already received Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1997. Then in the year 2002, he became the President of India. But Kalam remained a scientist and teacher.
