Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday booked former Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Aziz Qureshi, for sedition over his alleged derogatory remarks against the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his government. A case has been registered against Qureshi at the Civil Lines Police Station in Rampur district on a complaint by BJP activist Akash Saxena, police said.

In a complaint, Saxena alleged that Qureshi had visited Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan’s house to meet his wife and Rampur MLA Tazeen Fatma where he made derogatory remarks against CM Yogi Adityanath government and compared it with Satan and blood-sucking monsters. Qureshi’s controversial statement could create tension between the two communities and lead to communal riots, the complainant alleged, Saxena alleged in his complaint.

According to the FIR copy, the former governor has been charged under Section 153A for inciting caste-religion hatred and making statements against national unity and integrity, 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 124A (sedition), and 505(1)(B) (intent to cause fear or alarm to the public), said Sansar Singh, ASP, Rampur.

Qureshi had said he does not need to say anything about the torture and atrocities done by this government on Azam Bhai. He had come to tell the family to have courage. Allah is with them. Inshallah, victory will be theirs. This government should be ashamed of itself ..where the government is after Azam Khan’s life, one case after another is being lodged. It is a fight between the devil and man. The devil and the blood-drinking monster are on one side and human beings are on one side, he said.

However, Qureshi, in his defence said his words are being misquoted to politically harm him and mislead the public. He had said that there haven’t been as much atrocities in earlier days as today and that he hasn’t made any remarks against anyone.

Qureshi (81), is a senior Congress leader and had served as the Governor of Mizoram from 2014 to 2015. He also had charge of Uttar Pradesh for some time.
