The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), which was in the news for their 13-month-long farmers’ protest against the three farm laws, has now announced that they are going to split as some senior leaders announced that they are forming a new separate outfit. The new outfit is named Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) (Apolitical). This new separate union is being led by Rajesh Singh Chauhan and he even said that they dismissed seven leaders of their outfit and called them anti-farmers.

The leaders of the BKU Apolitical also alleged that they were upset with the political statements that were made by BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait during the farm laws protests and the recent assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Rakesh Tikait told The Hindu that for the last two days they were trying to listen to their demands, but they said they were left with no other option. He further said that it seems the government, threatened by their support among farmers, showed these people the fear of bulldozers and confiscation of their land.

Harinam Singh, the UP chief of the newly formed outfit, said that BKU (Apolitical) was formed because of the disagreements with BKU… Mahendra Singh Tikait was of the view that when we go to the government with 10 demands and even if four of them are accepted, the agitation should be withdrawn. But what is the situation today? The agitation continued for 13 months (against the three farm laws) and the laws were repealed after that. And yet people are not satisfied. It is a big issue.

Notably, the split came on the day when it was the death anniversary of BKU founder Chaudhary Mahendra Singh Tikait.

BKU was formed in 1986 and was formed by Mahendra Singh Tikait. He died in 2011 and after that, his sons, Naresh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait – led the outfit. Naresh is BKU’s president and Rakesh Tikait is the outfit’s spokesperson.
