Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday addressed a press conference, particularly to talk about the issue of farmers and Union Budget of 2021. Speaking at a media briefing, he said that the protesting farmers will not back down and it is the government who will have to back down, and better they do it today. The protesting famers will continue with their protests, he said.

The development comes amid renewed support for those fighting to repeal farm laws, particularly after emotional appeals from Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh Tikait and a six-word tweet from international pop star Rihanna and other world celebrities.

Asking several questions to Modi government, Gandhi said that the issues raised by the protesting farmers’ need to be resolved urgently. Delhi is surrounded by farmers. They are the people who give sustenance to the people of the country but why the Delhi is being converted into a fortress? This situation is not good at all for the country.

Gandhi also criticised the government over disturbing images of farmer protest sites along the Delhi border being turned into fortresses, complete with barbed wire, concrete walls, row upon row of metal barricades and large groups of police and paramilitary forces standing guard.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also slammed the Central government for the Union Budget 2021 saying that the budget is for only 1 per cent of the population. He told the reporters that he had expected from the budget that the government will provide support to 99 per cent of India’s population but this budget is that of the 1 per cent population.

Gandhi also accused the government for snatching money away from the hands of the people in small and medium industries, workers, farmers and defence forces and placing it in the hands of 5-10 people. He emphasised that India need to put money in the hands of the people in order to restart its economy which is possible only through increased consumption and not from the supply side.

He also said India’s image has taken a huge beating not just in the way farmers are being treated but the way in which citizens and journalists are being treated. India’s soft power has been damaged by this government. He also asked the government that where is the confusion? There is only one issue that is repeal the farm laws as he urged the government to address farmers’ concerns instead of threatening them.

Gandhi has been vocal on the farmers issue over the past few days. On Monday he hit out at the government for ordering Twitter to shut down some 250 anti government handles tweeting, or retweeting, with the #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide hashtag. Hours before that he tweeted on fortresses at protest sites and said build bridges, not walls.
