Following Virat Kohli’s step down from captaincy of Indian Test cricket team, he will return to the whita ball format as a pure batsman. The most famous names in Indian cricket scene have shared how sad the news made them. Gautam Gambhir, former Indian opener feels slightly different.

Gautam Gambhir is of the view that captaincy is no one’s birthright. People like MS Dhoni have also played under a different skipper after quitting captaincy. Gambhir thinks that so should Kohli. He believes that Kohli should prioritise scoring runs. He said that when one doesn’t imagine themselves as a captain when they dream of playing for India. They dream of winning games for India, and nothing changes except that they wouldn’t be doing the toss or determining field placement. He added that every player’s enthusiasm and intensity should remain the same since it’s an honour to represent the country.

Former Test captain Virat Kohli announced his decision to quit captaincy on January 15, 2022. Till date, Kohli is the best Indian Test cricket captain. After MS Dhoni announced his retirement from Test cricket, Kohli was appointed the official skipper of the Indian Test team in 2015. Since then, he has led the Indian team to the peak of Test success. Under his leadership, the team reclaimed first place in the ICC test rankings and qualified for the first-ever ICC World Test Championship final.

Kohli’s record as Test captain is one that has not been achieved by many. Out of the 68 Test matches that India played under his captaincy, 40 were won, 11 were drawn and merely 17 were lost. He has set very high standards as captain of the team. Now, Kohli will return to the playing field purely as a batsman. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be appointing the new Test captain. It has been revealed by a BCCI that the selection committee is yet to make any recommendations for the name of next Test captain and that there has been no discussion on the decision yet.
