Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday fled his official residence in Colombo as protesters surrounded the house.

Reports say developments were reported after Sri Lankan Police fired tear gas to control thousands of protestors gathered outside his residence.

As per Sri Lanka-based Daily Mirror, protestors have entered the residence of the President. Pictures and videos of the same are doing rounds on the internet which shows protestors holding Sri Lankan flags and helmets and breaking into the president’s official residence

Following the ruckus, police fired shots in the air to manage the angry crowd.

Ahead of the protests demanding Rajapaksa’s resignation, the authorities had implemented a strict curfew. Reports also said that thousands of anti-government protestors refused to follow the curfew and forced railway authorities to operate trains to Colombo.

Sri Lanka is witnessing one of the worst economic crises in its history. From 12-hour power cuts to an extreme scarcity of food, fuel, and other basic necessities, the economic crises in the island nation got worse due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed that the country will host the Aisa Cup 2022 tournament.

“We will leave it to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to make the announcement but our board president Shammi Silva has informed Jay Shah, the president of ACC, about our preparedness to hold the event,” Mohan de Silva, secretary of the SLC, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
