The International Cricket Council (ICC) board on Saturday unanimously re-elected Greg Barclay as chairman.

Barclay was re-elected as independent speaker for a second two-year term. Barclay was elected unopposed following the withdrawal of Tavengwa Mukuhalani. Greg Barclay is a commercial lawyer in Auckland. Barclay was appointed as the ICC chairman in November 2020.

Greg Barclay Hale was the President of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and also the Director of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015. On his re-appointment, Greg Barclay said that he was honoured on getting re-elected as Chairman of the International Cricket Council and that he would like to thank his fellow ICC Directors for their support.

Re-elected for two years

Greg Barclay added, “Over the past two years we have made significant progress with the launch of our global growth strategy which provides clear direction to build a successful and sustainable future for our sport. I look forward to continuing to work closely with our members.”

Tavngwa Mukuhalani had withdrawn his name

To strengthen and grow cricket, Barclay said that he would ensure more people around the world can enjoy cricket. I want to work together for this. Mukuhalani said, “I congratulate Greg on his appointment as ICC President. The game has the best interests of the game under Greg’s leadership, so I have decided to withdraw my name.”

Know how the ICC Chairman is elected?

• The 16 board members of the ICC together choose their chairman. It has 12 Test playing countries.
• Firstly, let us know the names of those countries: India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, England, Australia, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Ireland,
• These 12 countries have one vote each, with three allies Malaysia, Scotland and Singapore having three votes.
• 1 vote goes to the independent director of ICC, who is currently PepsiCo’s Indra Nooyi.
• Out of this, the candidate who gets 9 or 51 per cent of the vote is the new President of the ICC.
• Earlier, a two-thirds majority was required to elect the Speaker, but this has been changed in the recent proposal. BCCI has a very strong position in the ICC, because BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world.
