In a horrifying incident, a woman killed her son to be with her lover in Gujarat’s Surat. After killing her son, the woman lodged a complaint about her child’s absence. She then joined the police in search for her missing child for three consecutive days. However, the child could not be traced. Meanwhile, as the police investigated the matter further, the woman became a suspect and was subsequently arrested.

Reportedly, the woman watched ‘Drishyam’ to avert the arrest. In the aforementioned film, there is a crime scene where the body is disposed of after a murder and the case remains unsolved with no arrest made. The women believed that by following the film’s method, the police would not be able to apprehend her and she could join her lover in Jharkhand. According to reports, the woman is identified as Nayana Mandavi. She worked as a labourer at a construction site in Surat’s Dindoli area. The victim is identified as Veer Mandavi.

Reports claim that the police examined the CCTV footage from the construction site where the woman was employed but did not see the child leaving the premises. Considering this, the police team concluded that the child had not left the construction site. Subsequently, the police interrogated the woman extensively about the disappearance of the child. However, the woman did not provide any satisfactory replies. Later, the police also used a dog squad to search for the missing child, but they did not gather any evidence that the child had left the construction site alive.

As the interrogation proceeded, the woman blamed her lover for kidnapping her child. Her lover reportedly hails from Jharkhand. The police contacted him, however they could not trace his location near Surat. He informed the police that he had never been to Surat. According to reports, the police team faced a significant challenge in finding the whereabouts of the child since he did not leave the construction site and there was also no evidence of abduction. The team strengthened their questioning thereafter. Upon extensive interrogation, the woman confessed about killing her son but did not provide the correct information.

The woman asserted that she had buried the body in a pit, nonetheless, when the location was excavated, nothing was found. Later again, she told the police that she had thrown the body into a pond, but the police did not find anything there either. The woman, when put under rigorous questioning, revealed that she had thrown the body into a pit which was intended for the construction site’s toilet. The child’s body was recovered from the construction site.

When enquired about her motive behind killing her son and hiding the body, the woman said that she was originally from Jharkhand and had a lover there. He told her that he would not accept her if she arrived with her child. In an effort to gain acceptance from her lover, the woman killed her son. Following the murder, she watched the film ‘Drishyam’ to escape and learn how to hide the body.

A Gujarat diamond broker was arrested for allegedly conning a Surat-based diamond trader of Rs 32 lakh by replacing diamonds with packets of gutka (chewing tobbaco).

According to the police, the victim, Rushab Vora, a diamond trader by profession, filed a police complaint in which he claimed that a broker, identified as Raheel Manjani, approached him and convinced Vora to hand him polished, round and natural quality diamonds worth Rs 32,04,442 from his office under the pretext of selling them to another trader on a profit.

As per Vora’s complaint filed at the Mahidharpara police station , Manjani collected the diamonds in three sealed packets between February 13 and 21, 2023, and paid Rs 2 lakh to Vora as token amount while promising to pay the rest of the amount within the next three-four days.

However, when the broker did not pay Vora the owed amount in the given time, the trader asked him to return the diamonds.

Manjani returned the “sealed” parcels to Vora but the trader felt something fishy was going on and asked the broker to open the packets and to his utter shock, Vora found that instead of diamonds, the parcels contained packets of gutka inside them.

The diamond trader in his complaint has alleged that the accused took him into confidence and conspired with another trader to rob Vora of the said diamonds by replacing them with gutka packets.

A senior police official said that based on the diamond trader’s complaint, the broker was arrested and a case was registered against him under sections 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The official said that its being investigated whether the broker acted alone or is in cahoots with other diamond traders in the conspiracy to con Vora of his diamonds.

In a bizarre and macabre incident fueled by superstition, a middle-aged couple in a village of Rajkot district in Gujarat reportedly decapitated themselves using a home-made guillotine to offer their heads in a human sacrifice ritual.

According to the police, the deceased couple, identified as 38-year-old Hemubhai Makwana and his 35-year-old wife Hansaben, made a guillotine at home and used it behead themselves at a sacrificial altar.

Vinchhiya police station Sub-Inspector Indrajeetsingh Jadeja said the couple beheaded themselves at a sacrificial altar and planned the beheading in a such a way that their severed heads rolled into the altar fire after decapitation.

Giving details, the officer said the couple prepared a fire altar for sacrifice and later put their heads under a home-made guillotine held by a rope. The couple then released the rope, making the iron blade come down upon them and decapitating the husband and wife with their severed heads rolling into the fire.

The Gujarat government will press for the death sentence to 11 Godhra train burning case convicts in whose capital punishments were reduced to life terms by the state’s high court, the counsel for the BJP-led state government told the Supreme Court on Monday.

Appearing for the Gujarat government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a supreme court bench comprised of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala that the Bhupendrabhai Patel-led government will be “seriously pressing” for handing the death penalty to convicts whose sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Solicitor Mehta stressed that this is rarest of rare case where 59 people, including women and children, were burnt alive and it’s been proved consistently that the bogey was locked from the outside so the victims could not escape.

He said that 11 convicts were sentenced to death by the trial court and 20 others were granted life terms in the case with the Gujarat High Court upholding 31 convictions and commuting the capital punishments of 11 convicts to a life sentence.

Mehta said that the Gujarat government has come with an appeal challenging the commuting of the death penalty of the said convicts while several accused have filed pleas against the high court upholding their convictions in the case.

Two convicts have been granted bail by the apex court so far while seven other bail pleas are pending adjudication.

The Supreme Court bench noted that a large number of bail pleas have been filed before the top court in the case and directed the advocates of the applicants and Gujarat standing counsel, Advocate Swati Ghildiyal to prepare a comprehensive chart with all relevant details. The matter is scheduled for listing after three weeks.

The apex court had on January 30, sought the Gujarat government’s response on the bail pleas of convicts Abdul Raheman Dhantia alias Kankatto, Abdul Sattar Ibrahim Gaddi Asla and others. All of them are serving life term in the case.

In its response, the Gujarat government said it wasn’t merely a case of stone pelting as the convicts had bolted a bogey of the Sabarmati Express and set it ablaze, leading to the death of several passengers on the train.

At least 59 people were killed when a coach of the Sabarmati Express was torched in Gujarat’s Godhra on February 27, 2002. The incident had trigged the infamous Godhra communal riots.

A 54-year-old woman was struck and killed by the Mumbai-bound Vande Bharat Express train close to Anand railway station in Gujarat on Tuesday.

According to news agency PTI, the victim has been identified as Beatrice Archibald Peter. According to the report, which also cited an official, she was crossing the track at the time of the accident at 4:37 p.m.

The train was travelling from Gandhinagar Capital station to Mumbai Central. The train does not have a halt at Anand station. The report further stated that investigation has been initiated in the matter.

The incident happened the day after it was reported that stones were allegedly thrown at a Vande Bharat train carrying Asaduddin Owaisi, President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in Gujarat, a state where elections are ensuing. Police, however, refuted the assertion and stated that they were still looking into the Monday incident.

In the past month, there have been at least three instances of animals dying on the track after being struck by Vande Bharat train.

In Gujarat’s Valsad, at 8:30 am on October 29, a cow was struck by a Mumbai-Gandhinagar Vande Bharat Superfast Express train, causing damage to the engine’s nose cover.

Since the semi-high speed train was introduced on September 30 and was built and manufactured locally, there had been three instances of train-cattle collisions. The train’s first journey was signalled off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Two similar occurrences involving cattle being run over by the newly launched Vande Bharat Express happened in the first week of October. On October 6, a train travelling from Mumbai to Gandhinagar killed four buffaloes between the Vatva and Maninagar in Gujarat railway stations. The damage required an overnight replacement of its nose panel.

The second incident happened the following day, on October 7, when the train hit a cow while travelling to Mumbai through Gujarat’s Anand region.
