Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is one of the most auspicious days in Sikhism. Founder of the Sikh warrior community called Khalsa in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and last Sikh Guru.

Guru Gobind Singh, a spiritual master, philosopher, poet and warrior, also introduced the five Ks—Kanga, Kesh, Kachera, Kara, and Kirpan—the five articles of faith that Kahalsa Sikhs wear at all times. Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is celebrated across the country and the world with great fervour and enthusiasm by the Sikh community. This day holds a special significance for the Sikh community and is considered one of the most celebrated festivals.

Guru Gobind Singh, the last of the ten Sikh Gurus, was born on December 22, 1666, in Bihar’s Patna. As per the Nanakshahi calendar, he was born on the Saptami tithi, Shukla Paksha in the month of Poh.

Born to Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh guru, and Mata Guruji, Guru Gobind Singh became the protector and the leader of the Sikhs after his father was killed by Aurangzeb. He led the Sikh Community at the age of 9.

In 1699, he went to form the Sikh warrior community, Khalsa. He further established the Five Ks, Kangha (a wooden comb), Kesh (uncut hair), Kirpan (a sword), Kacchera (short breeches), Kara (iron or steel bracelet) which are the most important things in Sikhism.

Who was Guru Gobind Singh Ji?

Guru Gobind Singh Ji was the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. When Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was merely nine years of age, his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was killed by Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam, becoming the tenth and final human Sikh Guru. Following his father’s death, Guru Gobind Ji emerged as the leader and protection of the Sikhs and continued to struggle against the Mughals’ atrocities against his community. His four sons died during his lifetime – two in battle, two executed by the Mughal army.
