Malayalam superstar Mammootty is celebrating his 70th birthday today. Born as Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, the actor has bagged three National Film Awards through his promising acting.

Mammootty made his acting debut with the 1971 KS Sethumadhaban’s film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. Started off as a junior artist, now the actor has emerged as one of the most popular actors in Indian cinema in five decades. He has been awarded several prestigious accolades including thirteen Filmfare Awards South and 7 Kerala State Film Awards. Apart from Malayalam, he has also worked in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and English cinema.

On the occasion of Mammooty’s 70th birthday, here are some of the best performances by the actor:

Ponthan Mada:

Helmed by TV Chandran, Ponthan Mada has won 4 National Film Awards. The plot of the film involves the compassionate relationship between a low-caste man and a colonial landlord. The spectacular performance of Mammootty in this film served him with a National Film Award.

The King:

Mammootty played the character of the district collector Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex in the film. The film was a huge success and became the highest-grossing film in the year 1995. The King ran in theatres for 200 days.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha:

This historical epic film won Mammootty his first National Film Award. Directed by Hariharan, the film talks about Chanthu Chevakar, played by Mammootty, who is a Keralite warrior and a misunderstood historical character.

Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha:

The superstar played three characters in this film. Based on a bestselling Malayalam novel TP Rajeevan, this film revolves around the first recorded murder case in Kerala.

Peranbu:

Directed by Ram, the film was released in 2018. It depicts the story of a confused father, who is dejected after his wife abandons him and their child, who has cerebral palsy, struggles to take care of his daughter while society constantly rejects him.
