The results of the Haryana Panchayat polls were announced today, with the candidates of the BJP, AAP, and INLD winning several seats in the state’s Zila Parishad. The Haryana state government gazette will update the names of all elected candidates before November 30.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 22 seats out of the 102 in Zila Parishad; it was contesting in seven districts, including Gurugram, Yamunanagar, and Ambala. The BJP, however, suffered a setback in Panchkula, where it lost 10 Zila Parishad seats. Suman Saini, the wife of BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini, lost the election in Kurukshetra.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was successful in grabbing the seat in panchayat polls as it bagged over 15 seats out of around 100 seats in Zila Parishad in districts including Yamunanagar, Sirsa, Jind, and Ambala. AAP has been able to establish its presence in Sirsa, which is largely dominated by INLD.

With 72 Zila Parishad seats up for election, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won 14 of them. INLD leader and Ellenabad legislator Abhay Chautala’s son Karan Chautala won from ward number 6 of Zila Parishad in Sirsa by more than 600 votes.

Aseem Goel, a two-term MLA in Ambala, suffered a setback as well. Overall, the BJP was only able to gain two seats; however, BJP rebel Deepika Sharma also won as an independent. Even though the Venod Sharma-led Haryana Jan Chetna Party did well in the civic elections, winning eight seats and the Mayorol election, they were unable to open an account. Six candidates were running under the party’s banner.

Three phases of voting were used to elect 143 panchayat samitis and 22 Zila Parishads. Haryana has 22 Zila Parishads, comprising 411 members. The 22 Zila Parishad chiefs will be chosen by each of the members. The state has 143 panchayat samitis, comprising 3,081 members who will further elect their respective presidents.
