The month of April is all about celebrating various religious festivals like Chaitra Navratri, Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, and Jhulelal Jayanti to mark the beginning of Hindu Nav Varsh.

Hindu new year or Hindu Nav Varsh has begun on April 2, 2022 with the month of Chaitra. It is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and the Konkani region while people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana celebrate it as Ugadi.

As per the Hindu calendar, the first day of Chaitra month is called Pratipada which is also the first day of Chaitra Navratri. It is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma created this universe. Hence, the Hindu new year is celebrated on this day.

It is celebrated as Ugadi in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The word Ugadi or Yugadi is the combination of two different words – yug (era) and adi (new beginning) that marks the Hindu New Year celebrations for the South Indian community. The Ugadi rituals begin with taking an oil bath and eating neem leaves. People also decorate their houses with mango leaves.

The Hindu Nav Varsh is celebrated as Gudi Padwa in Goa and Maharashtra. It marks the arrival of the spring season. On this day, people hoisted the Gudi flag to commemorate Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. They also take an oil bath, hoist Gudi flags, and prepare rangolis.

A popular nine-day festival among the Hindus, Chaitra Navratri will start on April 2 and end on April 11 this year. It also marks the beginning of the Chaitra month. The auspicious occasion is observed to celebrate the valor of nine different avatars of Goddess Durga and the triumph of good over evil.

To celebrate the beginning of Hindu Nav Varsh, people across India usually observe a fast for nine days.

Chaitra, the first month of Hindu Nav Varsh, is celebrated as Jhulelal Jayanti in Sindhi society. It marks the birth anniversary of the Sindhi patron saint Jhulelal or Ishtadev Uderolal who was believed to be born in the 10th century in Sindh.

On this day, Sindhis worship water and take the Baharana Sahib (representation of Jhulelal) to a nearby lake, river, pond and canal.
