After compatriots, Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy crashed out of the Hong Kong Open Superseries in the second round of the badminton championship – Pusarla Venkata sindhu stands as the sole Indian to continue dominance in the tournament.

After entering the quarter finals with ease, Sindhu outplayed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan to enter the semi-finals of the championship. The 2016 Rio Olympics silver-medalist dominated the match as she defeated the fifth seed Japanese shuttler 21-12, 21-19 in 37 minutes.

On Thursday, displaying a spectacular improvement from her performance at the China Open Superseries, World No 2 Sindhu clinched an easy 21-14, 21-17 victory in 39 minutes against former Asian junior champion Aya Ohori on Thursday.

While Sindhu continues her brilliance in the $400,000 prize money tournament, ace shuttler Saina Nehwal – who recently defeated Sindhu to lift the India Senior Badminton National championship trophy – had a disappointing second round, as she lost 18-21, 21-19, 21-10 in her maiden encounter with Chen Yufei of China. Despite taking an early 7-1 lead against the Chinese shuttler, former World No 1 Nehwal started losing grab of the match and gradually faced defeat against the speedy World No 8.

On the other hand, another Indian shuttler, HS Prannoy – who is at the tenth spot in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings – lost 11-21, 21-10, 21-15 to Japanese badminton player Kazumasa Sakai in the second round of the Superseries. This was the Indian shuttler’s third consecutive loss to 27-year-old Japanese shuttler – with Prannoy having lost earlier in the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Indonesia Open Superseries Premier.

The Hong Kong Open Superseries women’s singles had been continuing on expected lines – with seven out of eight seed making it to the quarter finals – with just one surprising exit. Carolina Marin of Spain – who had twice been the world champion and had also defeated PV Sindhu to clinch the gold medal in the Rio Olympics final – lost to Canadian shuttler Michelle Li 19-21, 21-13, 11-8 (retired).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
