A day after Congress leader Kapil Sibal’s home was picketed by his own party workers, his colleague Anand Sharma raised questions over the functioning of the Congress. He urged Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take strong action against those involved.

In a series of tweets, Sharma said he is shocked and disgusted over the protest outside Kapil Sibal’s house. Such attacks have brought disrepute to the party, this needs to be strongly condemned, he tweeted.

Sharma, who along with Sibal is part of Group-23 which last year had written to Gandhi about the organisational changes in the party, said intolerance and violence is alien to the Congress’ values and culture. The differences in opinion and perception are integral to a democracy, he said.

The attack followed Sibal’s “G-23, not Ji Huzoor-23” taunt at the Gandhis, who are facing a fresh set of Punjab leadership questions from the last few months in the poll-bound state.

Amid the ongoing Punjab crisis, Sibal had demanded the party to hold an open dialogue questioning the Congress’ clarity in the decision-making process in Punjab. Questioning the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Sibal had asked who is taking decisions in the absence of a full-time president.

This led to protest outside his house by Congress workers who carried placards, posters and banners and threw tomatoes at his house and damaged his car.

At a time when the party is facing crisis in many states including Punjab, this episode of hooliganism highlights the infighting in Congress. It also comes when the party is struggling with a huge crisis in Punjab, barely four months before state polls, after the sudden resignation of its state chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Sonia Gandhi has been interim chief since 2019, when her son Rahul Gandhi quit over the Congress’s second straight defeat in successive Lok Sabha elections.
