Four members of a family, including three women, were forced to consume human excreta in Jharkhand’s Dumka district. The police on Sunday said the villagers thrashed them over allegations of practicing witchcraft in Aswari village.

Saryahat police station in-charge Vinay Kumar said the family was also tortured with a hot iron rod and parts of their bodies were also burnt. He stated that the villagers started hitting them after branding them witches, and thereafter, they filled human excreta in a bottle and forced them to consume it.

The police reached the spot as soon as they received information about the incident. The police rescued the people and said the inhumane torture started on Saturday night and continued till Sunday.

NK Singh, Inspector, Saraiyahat Police Station, said some villagers first thrashed the women brutally after branding them witches, and later human excreta and urine were forcibly put in their mouths.

The victims have been admitted to the community health centre in Saryahat. However, the doctors referred two of the victims to a hospital in Deoghar for better treatment as their condition was serious.

The police have arrested six people who were involved in torturing the family. The police have identified the accused and said they reside in the same village as the victims.

Torture committed under the pretext of witchcraft is a major social evil in the state. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 590 persons were killed between 2001 and 2020, predominantly women.

In other news, a mob allegedly assaulted a group of Muslim men on the suspicion of cow theft in Deosar tehsil of Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district. Police said that an FIR has been lodged against six persons under sections 294, 323, 506, 342 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
