In a hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu, 10 individuals have lost their lives including three women and seven police officials were suspended on Sunday.

The incident is reported from two districts on northern part of the state, where people fell sick after consuming illicit liquor on Saturday night and later died.

The opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have raised an uproar over the incident, attacking the MK Stalin government charging for their laxity in dealing with the illegal trading of liquor in the state.

According to the police, on Saturday night, a cluster of fishermen from a village near Villupuram district’s Marakkanam had consumed a spurious liquor. Following which, they began falling sick and were taken to the  hospitals located in the district and in neighboring region of Puducherry.

Sadly, six fishermen died within just a period of 10 hours on Sunday, Among the dead, it included a woman.

In the meantime, another such incident was reported from Chengalpattu district where a man and his wife’s mother died after consuming illegally sourced liquor.

As per reports, police carried out the investigation into the same and discovered that the illicit liquor consumed by them the man and his mother-in-law was sourced by their farm owner on the previous night of their deaths.

Meanwhile, the illicit brew supplied by the farm owner claimed lives of an elderly couple on Sunday.

The police has constituted six teams to nab the ones who have been involved in the trading and supply of these illegal liquor trading.

The Inspector General of Police (IG) North Kannan informed media saying six teams have been constituted and the police has also arrested three people involved in the incidents.

The senior police officer also said that his team his investigating to find if there was any connection between the deaths in both Villupuram and the Chengalpattu district. IG Kanan also informed that the preliminary investigation has revealed that consumed liquor was made of industrial grade methanol as one of its many components.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced compensation for the deceased families and financial aid for the ones who are in the hospital. Stalin said that action against the ones involved has already been started.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said that people have been dying after consuming spurious liquor. Everyone should be vigilant, because when liquor is banned, illicit liquor will be sold. Those who drink alcohol, will die, he said.

So far, 39 people have died due to consumption of spurious liquor in Chhapra, Bihar. The treatment of 30 patients is going on, whose condition is serious, which means that the death toll may increase further. In the Mashrak area where the incident took place, two people including SHO Ritesh Mishra have been suspended. An SIT has been formed for investigation and 20 people have been taken into custody.

After the hooch tragedy death toll soared in Bihar’s Chhapra, the JDU-RJD government faced backlash by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly and outside as well, on the negligence in imposing the liquor ban.

Earlier this week, Nitish Kumar lost his calm in the Vidhan Sabha over the protests and made fun of the BJP members by saying, “You are drunk.”

He stated on Thursday that it was important to show grief and then educate the public by visiting the impacted areas. He added that his government has been conducting extensive social awareness campaigns.

He argued that illicit liquor killed people even when there was no prohibition. He also said that people have also died in significant numbers in other states.

Similar deaths have recently occurred in Punjab and Gujarat, two states that have prohibition laws.

The Bihar CM further explains,you are aware of what Mahatma Gandhi said in support of liquor ban prohibition, what global research demonstrates, and how many people have died as a result of alcohol consumption, all of which have been sent to people’s homes. Toxic alcohol has been killing people for a while now, and it happens all throughout the nation.

Kumar also said that although his government has taken strict measures, everyone needs to be more vigilant. When alcohol is prohibited, there will undoubtedly be a problem with the product.

Additionally, keep in mind that you should never drink alcohol. The majority of people have supported the prohibition policy. However, some people will commit this mistake, he was heard saying.

Currently, there are just two states with liquor prohibition laws: Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Bihar. Mizoram and Nagaland both share similar laws with a few exceptions.

States like Kerala in the south and Haryana in the north have tried the law over the years but had to abandon it, primarily due to implementation issues.

Again! A horrific incident has been reported from Bihar’s Chhapra area of Saran district, where three people died after consuming spurious liquor. Reports also revealed that the death toll likely to climb further as many people who consumed the poisonous liquor were admitted to the hospital where their health condition is said to be serious.

News agency ANI also confirmed the news and shared the information about the same on its official Twitter handle. It wrote that 3 died, and bodies were sent for postmortem, these look like suspicious deaths. SP, S Kumar said that he has information that some more are receiving treatment at different places, ANI Tweeted.

The deceased’s family claimed that the cause of the death of their loved ones was illicit liquor. However, the police has sent the bodies for post mortem to know the actual cause of death.

Reports also say that the Madhapur DSP reached the hospital to check on people’s condition. It has been said that the police also started a search operation to reach all those people who consumed illicit liquor and hid somewhere to avoid questioning by the police as the supply of alcohol is not permitted in the state since April 2016.

Police said the investigation is going on and whoever responsible for the act, will not be spared.

Amid this, chaos was generated in the Bihar Assembly over the poisonous liquor that causes many deaths. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also launched a sharp attack on BJP, saying the party is selling spurious liquor in the state and is responsible for the matter. He also called the Narendra Modi-led party a drunkard. 

Meanwhile, this is not the first time such an incident come into the limelight. Earlier, a similar incident has been reported in Bihar where more than 10 people lost their lives after consuming illicit liquor.

A shocking video is doing rounds on the internet where some police officials can be seen seizing several cartons of illicit liquor from a school. The incident has been reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district.

Sharing this incident on Twitter, journalist Piyush Raj informed that in UP’s Kushinagar, 51 cartons of illicit liquor was recovered from a kitchen store of a government school within limits of Tamkuhiraj police station close to UP-Bihar border.

Journalist Ravish Ranjan Shukla wrote on Twitter that the liquor was found in a upper primary school near the Bihar border area. It was being smuggled to Bihar. A few day ago a video of a teacher drinking alcohol in this school went viral on social media.

In a similar incident, an assistant teacher, Shailendra Singh Gautam, was seen consuming alcohol at DRV Inter College of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. He was consuming a beer of bottle while teaching the students. The accused teacher, while lashing out at the person who recorded the video of the incident, was saying that make as many videos as they wanted. It won’t affect him, he added.

The District Magistrate took cognizance of this matter and ordered the concerned officials and the school principal to take an action against the accused teacher. Later, he was suspended and a probe into the matter was initiated.

Reports said that the School Operator Swatantra Kumar Gupta had suspended the assistant teacher, considering him prima facie guilty. He said that a three-member committee would investigate the whole matter after a meeting of the managing committee in this regard.

Shailendra Singh Gautam was appointed in the primary wing of this school in 2015. The incident took place on September 30.

In an implausible series of events, liquor started pouring out of hand pumps in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh.

The video of policemen operating a hand pump, and to much surprise, liquor coming out of it has gone viral on social media. When they further dug up, tanks filled with illicit liquor were found. These tanks were about 7 feet deep in the ground. The police have destroyed large quantities of this illicit liquor.

The police raided two villages, in Guna district, selling illegal liquor on Monday. During the operation, thousands of liters of raw liquor was confiscated. However, the accused escaped. Police have identified 8 accused and 8 cases have been registered in 2 police stations, reports said.

The accused fled on seeing the police. During the search, drums of liquor were found inside the ground. There were kutcha hut-like houses built here and a permanent water tank nearby. When the police started digging, one after the other many drums came out of the ground, claimed the reports.

In the last one year in both these villages, the police have taken action 4-5 times. Many times the police have raided in the wee hours of the day. Even after this the accused would escape. None of the accused would come into the clutches of the police. Only women were found at the time of action. At the same time, the police destroy the lahan and liquor making equipment, but within a few months the entire setup is put up again, said the reports.

A case was registered against the miscreants who attacked the police team, under sections including attempt to murder, rioting, police said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government in Gujarat, which is a dry state as well as PM Narendra Modi’s homeland for over more than 29 deaths related to the consumption of illicit liquor.

While pointing out the law and order in the state, Gandhi tweeted that in the dry state of Gujarat, many houses were destroyed by drinking spurious liquor. Drugs worth billions have been recovering from the BJP-ruled state continuously. He also called this a serious matter of concern. He said that on the land of Bapu and Sardar Patel, who are these people who are doing drug business indiscriminately? Which ruling forces are giving protection to these mafias?, a senior Congress leader added in his tweet.

Gandhi also mentioned in his long tweet that the Gujarat anti-terrorist squad has seized a container of 75 kg of heroin worth somewhere around Rs 376 crore at the Mundra port in the Kutch district.

Gandhi’s reaction to this comes when 36 people lost their lives in the Gujarat hooch tragedy in the Botad district and Dhandhuka taluka of the neighboring Ahmedabad district. Apart from dead, there are reports that have suggested that several people also fell ill and with timely treatment, their lives have been saved.

When the incident came in limelight, police investigated the matter and arrested at least 13 in the case. The report also suggested that further investigation regarding the same is underway.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing, selling, and consuming of any kind of liquor substance are banned in Gujarat. According to the state prohibition Act, police are allowed to detain or arrest any person who is found consuming, purchasing or serving liquor without permission with a punishment of a minimum of three months to maximum of five years in prison.
