Indian cricket team has set the target of 284 for the New Zealand team in the fourth innings of the first test match. Young debutant Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha’s half-centuries kept Men in Blue in the game.

Shreyas Iyer became the only Indian to score 50+ scores in both innings of a debut test match. He also became the third Indian to smash 150+ runs in a debut test match, previously Rohit Sharma (177) and Shikhar Dhawan (187) are in this list.

Earlier on day 4 of the first match, India started at 14-1, with a lead of 63 runs and nine wickets in hand after bowling out New Zealand at 296 on day 3. Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin shone with the bowl and took 5 and 3 wickets, respectively.

At once Men in Blue were in trouble when Ajinkya Rahane-led Indian team were 51-5. Veteran Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Rahane were in the pavilion. It was Shreyas Iyer (65), Ravi Ashwin (32) and Wriddhiman Saha (61) who saved the day for India and posted a fighting total on the scoreboard. Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee took three wickets each while Azaz Patel also scalped one on his name.

India declared their innings at 234-7 when there were still few overs to bowl on day 4 and gave a record target of 284 to chase for the Kiwi team. 284 will be the highest chased total if Kane Williamson-led New Zealand manages to chase this total it will be a record in India because no team has ever managed to total more than 276 in the fourth innings.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma-led Indian team clean-swept New Zealand in a three-match T20I series. Hitman has been appointed the captain of the T20 format of the national team after Virat Kohli decided to step down from the captaincy role in the shortest format of the game after the completion of the 2021 T20 World Cup.
