India dispatched the batch of relief material to disaster hit Turkey, hours after an announcement made about the same by the Prime Minister’s Office.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the first batch of earthquake relief material to Turkey- which consists of an expert National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) search and rescue team, highly-skilled dog squads, a range of medical supplies, advanced drilling equipment, and other crucial tools required for the relief efforts- was dispatched aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet announced that first batch of relief material to quake-hit Turkey has been dispatched along with NDRF Search and Rescue Teams, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines and other necessary equipment.

On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured. He also instructed officials to offer all possible assistance in coping with the aftermath of the earthquake, killing at least 3,400 people.

In a tweet, PM Modi condoled the disaster-hit nation saying that he was anguished by anguished by the loss of lives and damage of property due to the earthquake in Turkey. PM Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Turkish Ambassador to India Firat Sunel expressed his gratitude towards the Indian government’s offer of assistance and said that “a friend in need is indeed a friend”.

Sunel mentioned a Turkish proverb, “Dost kara gunde belli olur”, which means “a friend in need is a friend indeed”.

A massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake tore apart Turkey and neighboring Syria on Monday, causing widespread devastation and leaving at least 4,000 people dead and millions homeless.

Turkish and Syrian disaster response teams report more than 5,600 buildings have been flattened across several cities, including many multi-storey apartment blocks that were filled with sleeping residents when the first quake struck.
