General Electric announced that it will co produce its F414 engines in India having signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hindustan Aeronotics Limited (HAL) on Thursday. This comes amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing state visit to the United States.

The announcement from General Electric Aerospace was made through a press release. Describing the agreement as a major milestone, the subsidiary said that the F414 engines will power India’s indigenously made Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) Mk2.

The GE Aerospace CEO said that this was a historic agreement made possible through long standing partnership between the two countries. In General, electric Aerospace has been present for more than 40 years with engagements in engines, avionics, services, Engineering, manufacturing and local sourcing. It has been working with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and the HAL on India’s LCA project first with F404 and the F414s. It also operates two facilities in the country in Bengaluru and Pune.

The GE CEO said that GE’s F414 planes were unmatched. He said that the F414 will offer important economic and national security benefits for both countries as GE’s main objective was to meet the needs of their military fleet. Earlier in the day, PM Modi met General Lawrence Culp Jr and appreciated the country for its long term contribution to manufacturing in India.

The discussion focussed on GE’s greater technology collaboration to promote manufacturing in India, while PM Modi also invited the company to play a greater role  in the aviation and renewable energy sectors in India. In 1986, GE began working with the Aeronautical development agency and HAL to support the development of India’s Light Combat Aviation (LCA) with F404 engines

GE Aerospace said that more than 1600 F414 engines have been delivered globally. The pact is of prime importance as India has been sourcing its military jets from Russia and European Countries. GE CEO said that the company was proud to play a role in taking the Biden and Modi’s vision of closer ties between the two nations.

Joe Biden, the veteran Democrat, who served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017 during the presidency of Barack Obama, would formally be nominated at the Democratic National Convention in Wisconsin in August.

The nomination of Joe Biden is considered as a mere formality after his prime rival Senator Bernie Sanders withdrew from the race in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. In the presidential elections to be held on November 3, Joe Biden will challenge Republican incumbent Trump, 73, who is seeking re-election.

In his remarks after winning a majority of delegates in the Democratic presidential primary, Joe Biden said this is a difficult time in America’s history and Trump’s angry, divisive politics is no answer.

“The country is crying out for leadership. Leadership that can unite us. Leadership that can bring us together,” he said.

“We need an economy that works for everyone – now. We need jobs that bring dignity – now. We need equal justice – and equal opportunities – for every American now. We need a president who cares about helping us heal – now,” Joe Biden said.

Joe Biden has been consistently supportive of the India-US relations. In 2008 as a Senator, he had voted to approve the landmark civilian nuclear deal between the two countries.

During his visit to India in 2013, Joe Biden had said: “We want to deepen our strategic partnership on regional as well as global issues. The United States is elevating our engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. We refer to it as rebalance.

At the start of 2020, there were more than a dozen Democratic candidates in the race to the White House.

According to Real Clear Politics, which tracks all major national polls, Joe Biden is leading Trump by more than seven percentage points. However, Trump seems to be confident of pulling it off in the November elections.
