Google dedicates its surprise segment to Dr. Ranadive. This classic Google Doodle was dedicated to Indian cell biologist Dr. Kamal Ranadive on Monday to honour her 104th birthday. Ranadive is best known for her pioneering cancer research and for her dedication to make a more fair and equal society through science and education.

This doodle was specially designed by India-based artist Ibrahim Rayintakath in which we can clearly see the representation of Dr. Ranadive, gazing through a microscope.

As the director of the ICRC and a pioneer in animal research of cancer development, Ranadive was among the first Indian researchers to establish a connection between breast cancer and genetics, as well as to uncover connections between cancers and specific viruses.

Let’s know about the personal life of Dr. Ranadive

Kamal Samarath, popularly known as Kamal Ranadive, was born in Pune in 1917. She acquired her doctorate in cytology, the study of cells, in 1949 while working as a researcher at the Indian Cancer Research Center (ICRC).

She returned to Mumbai (Bombay) and the ICRC after completing a scholarship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, where she founded the country’s first tissue culture laboratory.

Ranadive suggested a connection between breast cancer and heredity. Also, she has identified linkages between cancers and specific viruses. Dr. Ranadive and 11 colleagues established the Indian Women Scientists’ Association (IWSA) in 1973 to encourage women in scientific fields.

When did Dr. Ranadive died?

Dr. Ranadive died at the age of 83 in the year 2001. Her death was due to an unidentified cause. Many believe that she had died due to natural causes on April 11, 2001.

Dr. Ranadive’s commitment to health justice and education continues to have a great impact on her students who work as scientists today.
