Tantia Tope was one of the notable leaders in the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Born on February 16, 1814, as Ramachandra Panduranga Yawalkar to a Marathi Deshastha Brahmin family, in Yeola, near Nasik, Tope is widely considered the best and most effective rebel general despite lacking formal military training. On April 18, 1859, he was convicted and sentenced to death. On April 7, he was captured by British forces and executed after a quick trial for waging war against the East India Company.

On the 203rd death anniversary of Tantia Tope, here are some facts about one of the greatest leaders of India’s First War of Independence.

The only son of Pandurang Rao Tope and his wife Rukhmabai, Tope was a well-known general during the 1857 rebellion.

Tantia Tope defeated the Indian forces of the East India Company in Kanpur in May 1857.

He specialized in guerrilla warfare techniques and was key in two victories over British Army General Havelock.

Tantia Tope was a Maratha Brahman who served in the service of Baji Rao, the former Peshwa (ruler) of the Maratha confederacy, and his adopted son Nana Sahib, who was also a key figure in the rebellion.

Tatya Tope surreptitiously organized an anti-British revolt with Nana Sahib’s support. British forces led by Sir Henry Havelock were defeated on June 27, 1857, due to the courage and heroism of Tantia.

He was the leading lieutenant in Rani Laxmi Bai’s army in Jhansi during the 1857 revolt.

According to historian Makkhan Lal, Tantia Tope believed in a one-nation ‘Bhartavarsha’ that included India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Man Singh, Tope’s loyal buddy, betrayed him by informing the British of his whereabouts. On April 7, 1859, the British Army apprehended him, and Tope proudly confessed to all of his crimes. On April 18 of the same year, he was hanged in Shivpuri.
