Indrani Mukerjea, who is the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case has been granted bail by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Recently, the murder case took a turn when last year in December, the former media personality and murder-accused Indrani Mukerjea in a letter to the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) claimed that her daughter Sheena was alive and is living in Kashmir.

Indrani got the bail after 6.5 years in custody and the trial is not going to end soon. It was also noted by the court that the other accused in the case, Peter Mukherjea is already on bail since February 2020. The court allowed Indrani to be released on bail subject to all those conditions on which Peter Mukherjea was granted bail.

Sheena Bora was allegedly strangled in the car by Indrani Mukerjea, driver Shyamvar Rai and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna. Her body was later found in a forest in Raigad district where it was reportedly burnt. The incident took place in April 2012.

A bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao, BR Gavai and AS Bopanna passed the order in a special leave petition filed against an order passed by the Bombay high court in November 2021. The SC bench noted that the case is based on circumstantial evidence and that even if 50% of the witnesses are given up by the prosecution, the trial will go on.

Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 in connection with the kidnapping and murder of her daughter Sheena Bora which took place in 2012. In this case, Indrani’s driver confessed that they murdered Sheena Bora along with Indrani Mukerjea and Indrani’s second husband Sanjeev Khanna.
