The global monkeypox epidemic has been declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), a level below pandemic, by the World Health Organization.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ” A Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) constitutes an extraordinary event, which constitutes a public health risk to other states through the international spread, and which potentially requires a coordinated international response”.

Nearly 17,000 people in 74 different countries have already been infected by the uncommon viral disease, which is native to central and western African nations.

The regional director for the WHO South-East Asia Region, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said that Monkeypox is quickly spreading to formerly unaffected countries. It has been observed that the disease is mostly affecting men who have intercourse with other men. So, the policies should be tactful and free from stigmatization and discrimination.

The WHO is also giving suggestions in an effort to encourage nations to take steps to curb the virus’s spread and protect people who are most at risk.

Health experts have already recommended that vaccination should be given to those who are most at risk of transmitting monkeypox like certain gay and bisexual males and healthcare professionals.
