The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a multidose vial presentation of Audenz (influenza A [H5N1] monovalent vaccine) for active immunisation for the prevention of disease in patients 6 months of age and older who are at increased risk of exposure to the influenza A(H5N1) virus subtype.

Audenz is an inactivated cell-based influenza vaccine with MF59, a unique adjuvant designed to boost and extend immune responses.

What is Influenza?

Influenza is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system of humans. The organs that are highly affected due to infleunza sre nose, throat and lungs. For majority, the flu leaves the body by itself. However, influenza and its consequences might be fatal in certain cases.

Who are at higher risk of catching flu and should get vaccinated?

  1. Children below the age of 5 years and especially those under 6 months.
  2. Senior citizens above the age of 65 years.
  3. People who have weak immune system.
  4. Pregnant women and women up to two weeks after giving birth.
  5. Residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
  6. Obese people with BMI of 40 and higher.
  7. People with chronic illness- asthma, kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease.

The vaccination is given intramuscularly in two doses (0.5mL each), 21 days apart. Antibodies to the flu vaccine develop in the body two weeks after inoculation. These antibodies defend against infection by influenza viruses that are spreading like wildfire.
