The International Day of Happiness is observed every year on March 20th. The United Nations first recognized this day in 2013, but a resolution to do so was passed on July 12, 2012. Bhutan was the driving force behind the resolution that emphasized the importance of achieving National Happiness.

The topic for this year’s International Happiness Day is Keep Calm, Stay Wise, and Be Kind. It is critical to maintain cool and calm in all situations if one wants to attain happiness and peace in his/her life. Staying wise in a challenging situation allows a person to gain a deeper grasp of the situation and helps them in taking appropriate steps.

The most essential thing in a person’s life is happiness. We have a tendency to live longer and be more productive the day we recognize the importance of happiness. The United Nations also believes that this should be a global objective and aspiration in people’s lives. A person who has a notion of what makes them joyful should celebrate the day the way they wanted.

International Day of Happiness 2022: History

Bhutan was the country that pioneered the value of National Happiness over National Income in the 1970s. At the 66th United Nations General Assembly, Bhutan was the only country to achieve the aim of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product. Bhutan hosted a high-level meeting on “Happiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm”.

Goals including ending poverty, eliminating inequality, and protecting the environment were among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals announced by the United Nations in 2015. The main focus of these three essential aspects resulted in the happiness and well-being of citizens all over the world. The day’s major goal is to raise public awareness about how important happiness is in one’s life.
