India, the biggest milk producer country in the world, had made a small start towards the milk revolution 75 years ago when Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (KDCMPUL) collected 250 litres of milk from two villages in modern-day Anand.

Eventually, the KDCMPUL, which was lacking in scale, has become not just a business, but a call to end the monopoly of Polson Dairy, a private company that had flourished under the British Raj.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played an important role in this call.

Before the start of the milk movement in India, farmers were unable to sell their milk in the market without the help of middlemen. They were totally dependant on the mercy of middlemen and only the Polson Dairy had the right to buy milk from the entire Kaira district. The farmers were angry because Polson exploited them.

This was the first time that the British had entered the dairy sector of India.

A delegation of farmers from Gujarat came to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and told him about their inability to send their milk to the markets without the help of middlemen.

Sardar Patel, who advocated farmers’ cooperatives as early as 1942, reiterated his advice that farmers should sell their milk through their own cooperative and these cooperative societies should have its own plants. He also advised the farmers to seek permission from the Britishers to set up such cooperative societies in India.

If their demand is turned down, they should refuse to sell their milk to middlemen and go on strike and due to such strike, the middleman and the company will also suffer some loss as they will not be able to sell their milk for some time.

If they are ready to bear the loss, Patel is ready to lead them, he had said.

The farmers’ delegation immediately accepted Patel’s proposal. After this Patel sent his trusted deputy Morarjibhai Desai to organize a milk cooperative in Kaira district.

Desai held a meeting on January 4, 1946 at Samarkha village in Kaira district. Among others, future PM Morarji Desai, and freedom fighter Tribhuvandas Patel, now fondly remembered as Tribhuvan kaka were part of the delegation.

It was the Lee who created the famous Marvel Universe. The man behind the world of superheroes, the real life superhero among Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man.

Once he had mentioned, what he thought about himself. “I used to think what I did was not very important,” Stan Lee had told the Chicago Tribune in April 2014. “People are building bridges and engaging in medical research, and here I was doing stories about fictional people who do extraordinary, crazy things and wear costumes. But I suppose I have come to realize that entertainment is not easily dismissed.”

Expressing grief, actor Robert Downey Jr “Iron Man” said on Instagram “I owe it all to you… Rest in Peace Stan… #MCU #Excelsior #legend #rip #stanlee #TeamStark”.

“We’ve lost a creative genius. Stan Lee was a pioneering force in the superhero universe. I’m proud to have been a small part of his legacy and… To have helped bring one of his characters to life. #StanLee #Wolverine,”said “Wolverine” actor Hugh Jackman, on Twitter.

“No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee. Stan leaves an extraordinary legacy that will outlive us all. Our thoughts are with his daughter, his family, and his millions of fans,” tweeted Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.

Marvel’s three most recent blockbusters, all released over a mere five months, were adaptations of Lee creations — Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp — and have grossed more than $3.7 billion, nearly matching the price Disney paid for Marvel in 2009. Since that purchase, Marvel has generated six of the top 20 global-grossing films, topped this summer by Infinity War crossing the $2 billion mark.

Lee also published several books, including “The Superhero Women” in 1977 and “How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way” the following year, when he was named publisher of the year by the Periodical and Book Association of America.
