Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, who criticised The Kashmir Files as propaganda and vulgar film at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa received harsh criticism from Israel’s top authorities.

The IFFI juror board has also disavowed his comments, referring to them as his personal opinion.

In a open letter uploaded on Twitter the day after jury head Nadav Lapid criticised the movie at the festival’s closing ceremony, envoy Naor Gilon also expressed his regret to India.

Israel’s ambassador to India, Naor Gilon took to twitter and wrote an open letter addressing Nadav Lapid for criticising him Kashmir Files.

He wrote a seven-point letter on why Lapid should be ashamed for his remarks. A guest is like a God in Indian culture and Nadav Lapid has abused this sentiment in the worst way, he wrote in the ltter adding that Israel has to maintain its composure when India, a country with such a rich film culture, watches Israeli productions. He also wrote that the relationship India and Israel is very strong, and it will endure the harm you have caused.

Gilon said that he understood Lapiud’s need in retrospect to justify his behaviour but he failed to understand his statement to a media establishment afterwards.

Lapid’s speech was a big mistake: Consulate General of Israel

Consulate General of Israel, Kobbi Shoshani also bashed out at Nadav Lapid’s remarks on The Kashmir Files.

He said that he cried upon watching the film. Jews too have suffered from horrible things and he thought it was not easy film to watch. He added that Nadav’s speech was unacceptable and that it was his personal opinion and had nothing to do with Israel.

His speech was a big mistake and that it was inappropriate. He is not representing the State of Israel, Shoshani added.

He must apologise because he entered a political dispute in India and it was something he must not have done,  the Consulate General of Israel concluded.

Kicking a major controversy, Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid called Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files as a vulgar and propaganda film.

Lapid made the above remarks at the conclusion ceremony of the 53rd Film Festival held in Goa on Monday. He is the jury head of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

The filmmaker further said all of the jury members were upset as such a film was screened at the festival. The film is very vulgar, he added.

In his statement, he said the jury was shocked and disturbed by the film Kashmir Files. It felt to them like propaganda, a vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival, he said.

Lapid further continued and said he felt totally comfortable sharing openly his feelings with the audience on stage since the spirit that is felt in a festival can truly accept also a critical discussion which is essential for art and for life.

About The Kashmir Files

The Kashmir Files, released on March 11, 2022, is based on the 1990 Kashmir insurgency. The film depicts the story of the exodus and genocide of Kashmiri Hindus. Stars like Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi and Mithun Chakraborty have played lead roles. The Kashmir Files did good business. It earned more than Rs 290 crore at the box office.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the film in the BJP parliamentary party meeting. He had said that such films should continue to be made as the truth is revealed through them. Efforts have been made to suppress the truth about Kashmir which is shown in the film.

Countries that banned The Kashmir Files

New Zealand

The film has been banned in New Zealand. The film was earlier approved for release with an A certificate, but after a review on the demand of the Muslim community, the censor board decided to ban the film.

Singapore

Vivek Agnihotri’s film was about to be released in Singapore, but the film was banned by the censor board there. After this news came, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor took a jibe at Vivek Agnihotri and at the BJP.

He said that the film has a one-sided portrayal of the wrong image of Muslims and the persecution of Hindus in the ongoing conflict in Kashmir. The film has the potential to create enmity between several communities and harm brotherhood.
