The Farooq Abdullah-led People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration has won big in the Jammu Kashmir’s District Development Council (DDC) election. The seven-party alliance including the Congress has won 13 districts. The BJP has won in six districts in Jammu. This was the first election in Jammu and Kashmir since the special status was scrapped by the Central government in August 2019. The state was reconstituted into a Union Territory. The elections were being held for 280 seats in eight phases over a period of 25 days. Officials in the State Election Commission said a total of 2,181 candidates including over 450 women were contesting on the 280 DDC seats. 

The alliance has won has won more than 100 seats, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party with 74 seats. The Congress has won 26 seats.

Calling it a victory of democracy, PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti tweeted that ] Gupkar Alliance fought the elections despite all odds.

As expected, the alliance scored in Kashmir while the BJP won most seats in Jammu.

In Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah-led People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration scored win in 72 seats, the BJP just won three seats. While Alliance is forming its government in 9 district councils, Independents are leading in the Srinagar district and it is undecided which way they will go. In Jammu province, the BJP won 71 seats, scoring in Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Reasi and Doda. The National Conference and Congress have won 45 seats, securing a victory in the Poonch, Rajouri, Kishtwar and Ramban districts. 

PDP youth president Waheed Ur Rehman Para won DDC seat from Pulwama with a huge margin of votes. He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on November 25, a few days after filing nomination papers as a People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) candidate.

Gupkar Alliance is a grouping of multiple mainstream regional parties of Jammu and Kashmir and two national parties including  National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Communist Party of India (M), Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, Awami National Conference and Indian National Congress aimed at restoring special status along with Article 35A.

Vote counting for Jammu Kashmir’s District Development Council (DDC) election is underway in which the latest leads show the Farooq Abdullah-led People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration is leading in 112 seats and has won 25 so far whereas the BJP is leading in 68 and has won eight seats till now. This is the first election in Jammu and Kashmir since the special status was scrapped by the Central government in August 2019. The state was reconstituted into a Union Territory. The elections were being held for 280 seats in eight phases over a period of 25 days. Officials in the State Election Commission said a total of 2,181 candidates including over 450 women were contesting on the 280 DDC seats. 

The Congress is leading in 19 seats and has bagged four seats so far.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti said she is proud of Para who won his maiden election by a huge margin of votes. Despite being arrested on baseless charges right after filing his nomination people have shown their love & trust for Waheed. Hope justice prevails, she added.

Vote counting may take longer than usual as the State Election Commission has opted for paper ballots instead of electronic voting machines or EVMs. 

Gupkar Alliance is a grouping of multiple mainstream regional parties of Jammu and Kashmir and two national parties including  National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Communist Party of India (M), Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, Awami National Conference and Indian National Congress aimed at restoring special status along with Article 35A.

Most of the leaders of Gupkar Alliance like former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were majorly missing during the election campaigns as they were detained soon after the centre abrogated article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The central government had imposed security restrictions to prevent protests in the Union Territory.

Anurag Thakur, the BJP’s in-charge for DDC polls said even though people were threatened, they came out in huge numbers to cast their vote. This is the victory of democracy. PM Modi’s dream that at grassroots level – panchayat, BDC & DDC elections should be held in J&K has been fulfilled.
