Residents of 723 houses which have developed cracks in Joshimath will be given assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh. A sum of Rs 50,000 for shifting and Rs 1 lakh will be given as advance of compensation. The amount of final compensation, it will be decided later.

After talking to the affected families on Wednesday, M Sundaram, secretary to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, informed the media about the decisions. He said that no houses will be demolished as of now, only 2 hotels will be demolished. Red marks have been placed on the houses to evacuate them. He said that discussions have also been held with the hotel owners, they have agreed to cooperate in the administrative action.

2 luxury hotels Malari Inn and Mount View, which have come close to each other in Joshimath, may get demolished today. SDRF and administration teams had reached here on Wednesday as well. But the process of demolishing them was not completed yesterday. The road around the hotels has been closed to demolish the hotels.

Latest updates from Joshimath

  • In front of Hotel Malari Inn, the family of the hotel owner was protesting by staging a sit-in dharna on the road. Secretary Sundaram said that discussions have been held with these people.
  • Chamoli Collector Himanshu Khurana said that cracks have appeared in Bahuguna of Karnprayag. The team of IIT Roorkee is conducting studies there. Necessary steps will be taken after their report.
  • IMD has predicted rain and snowfall in Chamoli from January 11 to January 13.

Both luxury hotels can be demolished today

The State Disaster Management Force (SDRF) is working on a plan to demolish these hotels step-by-step. Both the hotels are titling towards each other. They will demolished manually and no explosives will be used. The work of demolishing them will be done under the supervision of Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee.

CBRI Chief Scientist DP Kanungo said that the hotel cannot be repaired. They have to be demolished. The hotel’s foundation was affected by the ladder.

Joshimath and surrounding area sinking every year

A two-year study by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing revealed that land in and around Joshimath was sinking at a rate of 2.5 inches every year. This study has been done by the Dehradun-based institute using satellite data. Satellite images collected from July 2020 to March 2022 show that the entire region is slowly sinking. The data shows that the subsidence zone is spread across the valley and is not confined to Joshimath.

The Central Government on Tuesday said that a micro-earthquake observation system will be set up in Joshimath. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said that the work of installing micro seismic observation system will start from Wednesday. Joshimath falls under the highly sensitive earthquake zone 5, ergo seismic stress remains constant.

The ongoing land subsidence has led to cracks appearing in as many as 561 homes in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath which led to at least 66 families migrating from their homes due to the looming danger.

The residents are not only not only in panic but also are protesting against this. They took to the streets with torches lighted in their hands. The statement of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has come to the fore, saying that necessary steps will be taken to help people.

On the instructions of Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, a team of scientists will soon reach the spot to investigate the matter. The engieers from Geological Survey of India, Wadia Insitute and IIT Roorkee have been included in the team.

Large cracks appearing in numerous homes in the town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, caused alarm among the locals, and an unusual protest was witnessed on the streets as people emerged with torches in their hands.

Numerous people are seen marching through the streets holding torches in protest of the fractures in the houses that have appeared as a result of land subsidence, sometimes known as the vertical sinking of land.

SDC Foundation has released its third report on major natural calamities and accidents in Uttarakhand. According to the Uttarakhand Disaster and Accident Synopsis (UDAS) report, over 500 houses in Joshimath are not fit to live in. In the report, concern has been expressed about the frequent landslides in Joshimath.

People allege that the administration has not taken any action to deal with the situation, due to which they came out on the streets on December 24. On this day, around 800 shops in the city remained closed as a protest. The reasons for the Joshimath landslide have also been mentioned in the report. Apart from this, there no major disaster or accident has happened in the state in December 2022.

I will go there myself and review the situation: CM Dhami

CM Pushkar Singh Dham said that his government was continuously reviewing the matter of landslide. Two days back, reports have been taken in this regard from the Chief Secretary and officials of the Disaster Management Department. Whatever is needed there, work will be done accordingly. A team of experts is being sent there on Thursday. He added that he would go there himself and review the situation.
