Justice Uday Umesh Lalit (UU Lalit) was today sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI). President Draupadi Murmu administered him the oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. He will have a tenure of 74 days and will retire on November 08 on attaining the age of 65 years.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice N V Ramana and Union ministers were present at the ceremony.

Speaking at the farewell function of Justice NV Ramana, UU Lalit said that he has always believed that the role of the top court was to lay down law with clarity and the best possible way to do it was to have larger benches as early as possible so that the issues get clarified immediately.

He said that they will strive hard to say that yes, they will always have at least one Constitution bench functioning all throughout the year.

Many scholars have raised their concerns after this appointment as he has been representing the right-wing leaders during his legal career. He represented Amit Shah as an advocate in the famous Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati case. He also represented late BJP leader Kalyan Singh in a 1994 contempt case related to the demolition of Babri Masjid.

He was also part of the five-judge constitutional bench in the triple talaq judgment where the bench held that the practice of instant triple talaq was unconstitutional.

Yesterday, Justice NV Ramana said that progress was made in appointing more women judges and promoting social diversity on the Bench. He said that this process was a reflection of the coherence and determination of the judges to strengthen our institution, to further the goal of justice.

According to the reports, Justice D Y Chandrachud is next in line to be the chief justice of India.
