The US on Sunday blew up a vehicle carrying several suicide bombers amid an ongoing evacuation operation at Kabul International Airport, news agency Agence France Presse reported. As US is inching towards withdrawal of its troops from the war torn country after two decades, the terror attack fears are mounting high.

President Joe Biden has set a deadline of Tuesday (August 31) to withdraw all US forces from Afghanistan, drawing close to his nation’s longest military conflict, which began in retaliation for the September 11 attacks.

It was the second drone strike by US military forces since the Islamic State suicide attack on the Kabul airport on Thursday, killing 13 U.S. troops and scores of Afghan civilians trying to flee the country.

However, the news agency Associate Press reported that the number of children killed in a drone attack on Sunday has risen to 6. So far 9 have died in the drone strike, including 6 children. Earlier there was news that three children have died in this attack. The US has said it has killed suicide car bombers of ISIS as they were going to attack Kabul airport.

Two US military officials called the airstrike a success, saying there were several bombers inside the vehicle. At the same time, military spokesman and US Navy Captain Bill Urban said that the strike was carried out in self defence. The military is investigating whether any civilians were killed in the airstrike, Urban said, adding that the US would be deeply saddened by the possible loss of any innocent people in the attack.

Urban said that we are confident that we have successfully killed the target. It was indicated that there was a lot of explosives present in the vehicle. America is in the final stages of the evacuation from Afghanistan. The US State Department said in a statement signed by nearly 100 countries, as well as NATO and the European Union, that it had received assurances from the Taliban that people with travel documents would still be able to leave the country. The Taliban have said they will allow normal travel and take control of the airport after the US withdrawal is completed on Tuesday.

US President Joe Biden vowed on Saturday to continue the airstrikes, saying another attack was expected at Kabul airport. The State Department called the threat specific and credible. The Taliban have beefed up security around the airport after Thursday’s attack, clearing out large crowds that had gathered outside the gate hoping to join the airlift. The Taliban have promised amnesty to all Afghans, even those who have worked with the US and its allies.
