Karnataka’s Basava Siddalinga Swami of Neginahala Math died by suicide on Monday after his name appeared in a sexual assault case.

Siddalinga Swami was the seer of Madiwaleshwar Math and was found hanging in his quarter.

Swami ended his life after an audio clip of two women conversing about swamis of maths was leaked a few days ago. In the audio, the women were heard discussing the sexual harassment case filed against Murugha Sharma Swami.

One of the women was heard saying the math seers have been harassing women for a long time and she further mentioned Basava Siddalinga Swami’s name.

Reports say police have recovered a suicide note and ordered a probe. The reason for his suicide is unknown, however, it is believed that Siddalinga Swami took this step after his name came in the sexual assault case.

Meanwhile, Murugha Mutt seer Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who was accused of sexually harassing minors, was sent to judicial custody till September 14.

Reports say the application was filed by him that sought anticipatory bail for all four accused in the case.

Sharanaru was arrested by Karnataka Police on September 1 for allegedly assaulting two minor girls sexually. He was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO). The police also invoked the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe Atrocities Act against him after one of the victims turned out to be a Dalit.

The FIR was registered against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru in Chitradurga that said the minor girls were abused for more than 2 years.
