The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Varanasi District Magistrate to secure the area where a Shivling (symbol of Lord Shiva) was found inside Gyanvapi mosque complex but namaz should not be hindered. The court will hear the matter again on May 19.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha while was hearing the Gyanvapi mosque management plea challenging the videography survey of the Gyanvapi mosque.

After granting two days’ time to complete and submit the Gyanvapi mosque survey report, Varanasi court has removed the Advocate Commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra, who was appointed by the local court for the video survey, from his post for leaking the survey information to media.

The court has not seen the report, the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for the Uttar Pradesh government, replied and sought time till tomorrow to return with details.

Earlier on Monday, the local court directed the district administration to seal the area where a Shivling was claimed to have been found during the videography survey of the mosque.

Earlier in the day, Ajay Pratap Singh told the Supreme Court that the report has not been completed yet, only 50% report is ready. The commission asked the court to give 2-3 additional days to submit the survey report, he said.

After lawyers representing the Hindu petitioners, a local court on Monday had ordered the sealing of Wuzu Khana where a Shivling was found there in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex during the court-mandated videography survey.

Rejecting the Hindu petitioners’ claim, Anjuman Intezamiya Masjid Committee, said the object was part of the water fountain mechanism at the wuzu khana where devotees carry out ablutions before offering namaz.

Three court-appointed advocate commissioners, five lawyers each from the two sides and an assistant besides a videography team carried out the survey.

Shortly after a stunning claim by Hindu women petitioners, a Varanasi court on Monday ordered the immediate sealing off of the well in which a Shivling has been found within the Kashi Vishwanath Temple-Gyanvapi Mosque complex in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi.

The court also directed the Varanasi District Magistrate to ensure that nobody is allowed to enter the area.

As the third day of the court-ordered videography survey of the Kashi-Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi concluded on Monday, the Hindu petitioner in the case, Sohan Lal Arya claimed that the committee found a Shivling at the complex. The survey has ended a day before the next hearing of the case in court.

Speaking on the survey, UP chief Minister’s deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya said that the news of a shivling being found at Gyanvapi mosque premises is happy news for him and for all shiv followers of the country. The truth has come to light and his party will welcome and follow orders of the court in the matter, he said.

On the last day of the court-mandated videography survey of the mosque complex, a Shivlinga was found at the place where wuzu khana is there.

The application was filed on Monday in the Varanasi court by Advocate Hari Shankar Jain seeking access to pray at a shrine behind the mosque.

The three-day survey of the complex being done by the Commission concluded on Monday at noon, with officials saying that the findings of the survey were confidential.

A lawyer representing the Gyanvapi Mosque had approached the Supreme Court against the videography survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque complex saying it is at odds with the Places of Worship Act, 1991. He had also claimed that nothing unusual was found during the survey.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday condemned the Varanasi Court’s order on surveying the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex saying that the survey of Mosque violates the law. The survey is opening the path for the bloodshed of Rath Yatra and the anti-Muslim violence of 1980s-1990s, he said.

Condemning the Varanasi court’s order, Owaisi tweeted that the order to survey the Gyanvapi Mosque is a clear violation of the Place of Worship Act of 1991, which prohibits the conversion of religious places. The Supreme Court in the Ayodhya verdict had said that the act protects the secular features of India, which is one of the basic features of the Constitution, he also said in his tweet.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s statement comes a day after a court commissioner reached Varanasi’s Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Gyanvapi Mosque earlier today to survey and videography the premises in accordance with a court order.

On Friday, when the team reached Varanasi to conduct the survey, the Muslim crowd gathered at the spot and shouted slogans but the police removed everyone from the spot.

Amid Muslims’ objection to the Videography inside the mosque, it is still continued at the premises of Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Gyanvapi Mosque.

Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains in the headlines. In fact, many deities, including Shringar Gauri, located on the premises of Kashi Vishwanath and Gyanvapi Masjid, are being surveyed on the orders of the Senior Judge Division of Varanasi.

A group of Delhi-based lawyers had filed a petition seeking permission for daily worship and performing rituals at Shringar Gauri, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and Nandi located on the outer wall of the Gyanvapi mosque. Later, they had moved the court on April 18, 2021. After the hearing, Varanasi’s Civil Judge (Senior Division) Ravi Kumar Diwakar ordered videography of the Shringar Gauri temple in the Kashi Vishwanath-Gyanvapi mosque complex and other places after Eid and before May 10.
