India is globally known the superpower of agriculture. Achievement of such feat would not have been possible without the selfless hard work of countless farmers. December 23 every year is observed as Kisan Diwas to thank and honour the farmers in India.

To mark the day, we have compiled a list of top farm leaders of the country who worked really hard for the betterment for agriculture sectors and farmers in India

Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri was an Indian statesman, who served as the second Prime Minister of India. He started the campaign called the white revolution, which aimed to increase the production and supply of milk in India by supporting the Amul milk back then.

To boost the country’s food production, Shastri also started the Green Revolution campaign in 1965, which led to an increase in food grain production in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Chaudhry Charan Singh

Chaudhry Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902, served as the 5th Prime Minister of India between 28 July 1979 and 14 January 1980. In his tenure, he played a crucial role in the Indian agriculture sector. He enforced the Agricultural Produce Market Bill, which provided a safeguard to the farmers against the rapacity of traders.

Rakesh Singh Tikait

Rakesh Singh Tikait is the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) from Uttar Pradesh. Currently, he has become the face of the farmers’ protest against the central government’s controversial three farm laws, for which PM Modi said it will be withdrawn in Parliament during the coming winter session.

Gurnam Singh Charuni

Gurnam Singh Charuni is an Indian farm leader from Haryana and Punjab, chief of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) in Haryana, and a member of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of 40 farm unions that have protested over a year against three farm laws by the central government, which now have been repealed.

Chaudhary Devi Lal

Chaudhary Devi Lal was an Indian statesman who was born on September 25, 1914, and took his last breath on 6 April 2001. He served as 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1989 to 1991, under the government of V. P. Singh and Chandra Shekhar.

Lal worked really hard for the betterment of farmers in India. In his tenure, he ensured remunerative prices for the farm produce, initiated the norm of compensating the farmers for crop loss, waived their loans up to Rs 11,000, and introduced old-age pension and unemployment allowance for youth.

Medha Patkar


Medha Patkar is a social activist, who led the Narmada Bachao Andolan movement to help the people displaced by the Sardar Sarovar dam. She also started the Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan, under which she fight for the rights of slum-dwellers when the government of Maharashtra demolished 75,000 houses of the poor in 2005.

Kisan Diwas or, National Farmers’ Day is celebrated across the country on December 23 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. The day also aims to appreciate the role of Indian farmers in the economy.

It was 2001 when the government of India decided to mark Chaudhary Charan Singh’s birth anniversary as Kisan Diwas. Charan Singh had done exemplary works for the welfare of the farmers of India. He introduced several schemes and fought for their rights.

Kisan Diwas or, National Farmers’ Day is observed every year on December 23 to honour the legacy of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh. Born on December 23, 1902, Chaudhary Charan Singh once said, that true India resides in its villages.

Farmers are the backbones of our country. Farmers are the ones who work tirelessly around the clock and the year to make sure that people don’t starve and die of hunger, even if they struggle themselves for 2 square meals a day.
Therefore to celebrate their contributions to the country Kisan Diwas is observed every year on December 23.

Being an agrarian economy, almost 55% of our country’s population depends on agriculture and farming activities to earn their livelihood.

Kisan Diwas 2021: History

Chaudhary Charan Singh, the farmers’ leader, was the Prime Minister for a short period of time from July 28, 1979, to January 14, 1980. He had worked hard for the welfare of Indian farmers and had also introduced several welfare schemes. To honour his legacy, the government in 2001, decided to mark December 23 (his birth anniversary) as Kisan Diwas. Later on May 29 in 1987, he breathed his last in Delhi.

Kisan Diwas 2021: Significance

Being an agrarian economy, India is the land of villages. Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902. His birth anniversary is also celebrated as Kisan Diwas. And, on the occasion of his 119th birth anniversary, here is all you need to know about him:

When and where was he born?

Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on December 23, 1902 in a Jat family in Teotia clan. He hailed from a small village called Noorpur in District Hapur, Uttar Pradesh.

Who was his ancestor?

Charan Singh’s ancestor was a significant freedom fighter who fought by Raja Nahar Singh’s side during the Indian Rebellion of 1957. Raja Nahar Singh was hung by the British due to his role in India’s First War of Independence. After that, Charan Singh’s grandfather moved to Uttar Pradesh.

How did he enter politics?

Chaudhary Charan Singh was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and supported his ideology of non-violence. He followed Gandhi into the independence struggle and was imprisoned several times as well.

His time in Jail

He was sent to jail in 1930 for contravening the salt laws for 12 years. In November, 1940, he was jailed for a year for individual Satyagraha movement. He was again jailed in August 1942 by the British. This arrest was under DIR. He was released in November, 1943.

His relationship with Nehru

After India became an independent nation, Jawaharlal Nehru was in favour of adopting Soviet-style economic reforms. However, Charan Singh did not agree with him. Belonging from a farming background, he understood the struggles of a farmer. He was of the opinion that a farmer deserves the right of ownership of his land. Hence, he was not in agreement with Nehru and did not think cooperative farming would suit a country like India. He openly criticised Nehru and suffered politically.

Chief Ministership

In 1967, he quit the Congress and established his own political party called Bhartiya Kranti Dal. Prominent leaders like Raj Narain and Ram Manohar Lohia assisted him in becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1967 and 1970. However, he was jailed in 1975 during the emergency.

Prime Ministership

Indira Gandhi was voted out, following which, Charan Singh became the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister. After Janata Party won the 1977 elections, Morarji Desai was chosen the Prime Minister. Charan Singh became the Home Minister. However, he became the Deputy Prime Minister in January 1979 and the Prime Minister in on July 28, 1979. Later, he resigned from the post on August 20, 1979.
