Micro-blogging platform Koo, which is gaining huge popularity amid the ongoing tussle between the Narendra Modi government and Twitter, might not be safe. According to a French security researcher, Koo is currently leaking a lot of sensitive user information including email ID, phone numbers and date of birth.

The shortcomings in the Koo app have been revealed by French cyber security researcher Robert Baptiste, popularly known as Elliott Anderson, on Twitter. He said he spent around 30 minutes on the application on popular demand and found it to be quite leaky. He said the application the app is leaking personal data of the users: email, DOB, name, marital status and gender.

He shared several screenshots on twitter which show that Koo is indeed leaking data and it is quite possible that personal data of ministers and Indian government data might have been compromised. It is important to note that several union ministers urged people to join Koo in the wake of controversy surrounding Twitter. The home-grown micro-blogging application has been downloaded more than three million times in the past 24 hours. Baptiste came into limelight when he highlighted several vulnerabilities in the Aadhaar system.

The tussle between Twitter and the government started when the latter asked it to block more than 1,000 accounts accusing them of spreading misinformation in the wake of the ongoing farmers’ protest. Twitter withheld them but restored access to journalists, politicians, activists etc citing free speech. Following which, it was served a non-compliance notice by the government.

Twitter posted a blog citing actions it had taken following government’s blocking orders. The company highlighted the importance of free speech in the blog, which irked the government further. Several BJP leaders slammed Twitter and said it will have to follow the law of the land urged the government to take stringent action against it.
