The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday began hearing the Kulbhushan Jadhav case between India and Pakistan.

Pakistan, which began to make its case in the evening India time, after India’s Harish Salve, said court should dismiss India’s application.

Earlier, India informed the UN judicial organ that there is an “immediate threat” that the former Indian Navy officer, who has been given the death sentence for espionage in Pakistan, will be executed.

“The situation is grave, it is urgent, and hence we approached this court at such short notice,” senior lawyer Harish Salve, who is representing India, told the court.

India demanded that Jadhav’s death sentence be suspended immediately and declared illegal under international norms.

Salve described Jadhav’s trial as “farcical” and said the Indian was allowed to have a lawyer when the trial was nearly over. “The basic rights of Jadhav were thrown to the winds,” he said.

On May 9, the International Court had stayed the death sentence to Jadhav granted by Pakistan for espionage.

Jadhav, a former Navy Commander, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court last month for alleged espionage and subversive attacks. He was arrested on March 3 last year.

India, which had approached ICJ on May 8 and asked for a stay on the death sentence till the international judicial body hears the matter, said Pakistan had committed “egregious violations” of the Vienna Convention. Both India and Pakistan are the signatories of the convention.

India said that Pakistan had denied consular access to the former Navy officer, despite its repeated requests.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
