At least one person died and 11 others are injured after a four-storey building in Mumbai’s Kurla area collapsed on Monday late night. Several others have been trapped under the debris. The rescue operation is underway and, so far, eight people have been rescued.

Ashish Kumar, NDRF Deputy Commandant Ashish Kumar, said there is no confirmation on the number of people still trapped. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, around 20–25 people are likely to be trapped under the debris.

The reports stated that out of 11 people who are injured, 10 have been sent to Rajawadi Hospital, while one person is currently undergoing treatment at Sion Hospital.

Pravina Morajkar, local corporator said the colony where the incident occurred had four dilapidated buildings, and the residents were given orders to vacate five to six years ago, yet they continued to stay there. He further said that the BMC would relocate the tenants of the remaining three buildings on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited Kurla where the incident happened. Thackeray described the incident as unfortunate, adding that “buildings should be vacated whenever the BMC gives notifications, else similar incidents happen.” He further emphasized taking action over the building collapse.

He added, “Around five to seven people were rescued. All 4 buildings were issued notices, but people continue to live there. Our priority is to rescue everyone…In the morning we’ll look into evacuation and demolition of these buildings so that nearby people aren’t troubled.”
