Two Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labourers have been killed while another is reported missing after being buried under a massive snow avalanche in Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday evening.

Reports said that an avalanche hit near Chika in the Lahaul subdivision of Lahaul-Spiti district on Sunday at around 3:pm in the afternoon, burying the three men under mounds of snow. A search operation was launched to search for the missing labourers and the bodies of two deceased, identified as 19-year-old Ram Budha and Rakesh, were recovered, officials said.

They said that District Emergency Operation Center (DEOC) Lahual and Spiti informed that an avalanche had struck near Shrinkula Pass (Chika) at 35 KM in Subdivision Lahaul, burying three BRO casual labourers beneath the snow along with their tools and machinery, including a snow cutter/ dozer.

The officials added that the dead bodies of two labourers have been recovered and brought to RH Keylong.

However, the search for another missing labourer, identified as Nepal resident Passang Chhering Lama, was called off due to sub-zero temperature and low visibility. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, the search for the missing person will resume today.

In a similar incident, two Polish tourists were killed while 19 others were rescued by the police and rescuers after a massive avalanche hit the upper reaches of Gulmarg- the famed ski resort- in Jammu and Kashmir on February 1, last Wednesday.

According to the police, an avalanche swooped down and hit the Afarwat peak on Wednesday afternoon trapping a group of tourists and locals under the mass of snow. Afarwat is famous among skiers for its natural slopes.

They had said a rescue operation was launched by the Baramulla Police and two dead bodies of foreign nationals were been recovered while 19 tourists were been rescued and shifted to a hospital for treatment.

A video of the avalanche swooping down from the mountain as the horrified tourists scream and run for cover, went viral on social media.
