Punjab had undergone polling on Sunday for 117 assembly member seats. The state witnessed around 70 percent voter turnout. Amid the elections, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said that the party’s chief Navjot Singh Sidhu who is contesting elections from Amritsar East is likely to lose assembly elections because of his sharp language against leaders.

Congress MP said that Sidhu has not been among people in the last five years because many people have disliked his way of speaking. There is displeasure amongst people towards Sidhu. Being a national leader, in the last five years, he has given less time to them. It is likely to bring him harm.

Sidhu, who has been vocal on a number of state issues including drugs and sacrilege incidents, has used disrespectful language on public forums, said Aujla.

Sidhu is a powerful figure. Many people look up to him and want to be like him. He should refrain from using derogatory words about political figures, including those from the opposition parties, said Aujla. He further said that a powerful leader should be disciplined in his speech because he is in charge of the state and the country.

Despite the fact that Sidhu is a star campaigner, he added that Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had to take over campaigning on his assembly seat to speak for him.

Sidhu will face former state minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal politician Bikram Singh Majithia, who is the brother-in-law of Akali Dal chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal, in a key battle in Amritsar (East). Jeeven Jyot Kaur of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ran for the seat.

Congress MP said there is a triangular battle over the Amritsar East seat with the mobilisation by the AAP and Akali Dal.
