A peon working at a health centre in Palghar district of Maharashtra was sacked from duty after he reportedly tried to give a child an injection while being inebriated, officials said on Monday.

According to reports, the peon, who was allegedly drunk, tried to give a child brought to the health facility an injection. However, the kid’s parents objected to this and insisted that the injection be administered by a doctor or a registered nurse.

The entire incident was caught on camera and the video went viral on social media platforms which shows the peon, allegedly drunk, slurring his words as he and another man, presumably a doctor, is asked why the peon was insisting on administering the injection.

The viral video was widely viewed and shared on social networks with outraged users demanding action against the employee for his unprofessional and erratic behaviour. Other users pointed out the fact that the child’s health could have been in serious jeopardy if the man had been allowed to administer the injection.

After the incident came to light, a dismissal order against the peon was issued on Monday evening on the directions of Zilla Parishad president Prakash Nikam, an official said, adding that Nikam while condemning the incident, also issued a warning to staff against repeating such an episode in the future.

In a statement earlier, District Health Officer Dr Dayanand Suryavanshi had said that a peon at the Talasari primary health centre has been suspended for trying to administer an injection to a child on Saturday, adding that the situation was handled by a doctor who gave the child an injection instead.

Zilla Parishad health and public works committee chairperson Sandesh Dhone welcomed the irresponsible and unprofessional peon’s dismissal from service, adding that the man was intoxicated when the incident happened.
