As the new year arrived, a new list of development is set in action in the country. As a first step towards the betterment of sports infrastructure in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The ceremony will take place today, January 2, 2021, at 1:00 pm. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath will also be present in the ceremony.

Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has released its official statement in regard to this development. According to PMO, the Dhyan Chand University will be constructed in two villages in Sardhana town by the names of Salawa and Kaili. The estimated cost for the establishment of the sports university to be spread over 91 acres is about Rs 700 crores. PMO also added that fostering and establishing a culture of sports for the betterment of condition of sports in India is one of the main focuses of the Prime Minister. The construction of Major Dhyan Chand University is a first and very major step towards the fulfillment of this vision, said the PMO.

Major Dhyan Chand University is set to equip state-of-the-art sports infrastructure. The university will include football, basketball, volleyball, handball and kabaddi grounds. A synthetic hockey ground, lawn tennis court, gymnasium hall, swimming pool, a cycling velodrome, multipurpose hall and synthetic running stadium will also be included in the university. Apart from the above mentioned, the university will also include facilities for weightlifting, canoeing, kayaking, shooting, gymnastics, archery, shooting and squash. A total of 1080 sportsperson will be trained in the facility, with 540 males and 540 females.

Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are due in the next few months. This will be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit of 2022 to Uttar Pradesh. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to release the schedule for polls in January, 2022. The Prime Minister will be laying the foundation stone for a medical college in Kapurthala on January 5, 2022, in a virtual ceremony.
