The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, has announced that the threat level has been raised to its highest level of “critical” since the Manchester terror attack which has now claimed 22 lives.

A ‘critical’ threat means there is possibility of more terrorist attacks. Meanwhile, the death toll rose on Tuesday with three more casualties—a 15-year-old British girl and two Polish citizens.

According to BBC, the Prime Minister on Wednesday said that she did not want the public to feel “unduly alarmed” but was the “proportionate and sensible response”. The change of terror threat level came after investigators were unable to rule out if Salman Abedi, the dead terrorist, acted alone or was part of a group.

The highest threat level is decided by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and it has been deemed critical only at two previous instances. In 2006, the threat level was raised to “critical” during a major operation to thwart a plot to blow up a transatlantic airliner. In 2007, the security chiefs raised it once again as they hunted for men who had tried to bomb a London nightclub.

Military personnel will now be deployed at key sites to support armed police in protecting the public. BBC has confirmed that the number of deployed military personnel will be in hundreds.

Charlott Campbell, mother of Olivia Campbell, has, through a Facebook post, paid tribute to her “precious” daughter, aged 15, another victim of the Manchester terror attack. Meanwhile, quoting the Polish foreign minister, Reuters confirmed the death of two Polish persons who went missing after the terror attack.

The senior Met Police official leading the investigation has claimed that the investigation was “fast moving and making good progress”.

Salman Abedi—the 22-year-old former Salford University student who was born in Manchester to parents of Libyan origin—is thought to have blown himself up in the Manchester Arena’s foyer on Monday just when fans were beginning to leave a concert by US singer Arianna Grande.
