The highly-anticipated Netflix Bollywood film Meenakshi Sundareshwar premiered on November 5. The romantic comedy featured Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani in the lead roles. Helmed by Vivek Soni, the plot of the film revolves around a young married couple and their long-distance relationship.

The Madurai based film has been produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions.

The trailer of the film was dropped last month. In the trailer, the newlyweds focus on their dreams, dissimilarities, and insecurities in their relationship. They try to make their long-distance relationship work and how they pass through the difficulties.

Meenakshi Sundareshwar review

The film is finally out and so are the audience’s review. Twitter is swamped by Meekashi Sundareshwar’s review and it seems the movie failed to create the magic as promised. Going by the reviews, tweeple gave a thumbs down to the film. One user wrote that the film is an insult to the Tamil language and culture. Tagging the producer and actors, the user also called them out and wrote that Tamil culture is beyond make-up and costume.

Another user wrote that Meenakshi Sundareshwar is a passive-aggressive Hindi imposition on the South. The user tagged Karan Johar and further asked the producer to muster some guts next time to produce a regional movie in a language of that region. Reeks of Hindi imposition listening to proper Madurai vaasis conversing in Hindi.

Earlier, in an interview with a leading daily, Sanya had opened up about her prep for Meenakshi Sundareshwar, she had said that she wanted to get the dialect and tone right. The Tamil portion is not much because she didn’t want to offend anyone. She wanted to get the feel right. Sharing about her Tamil teacher, she revealed that her teacher is from Delhi and helped him to get the tonality right.
