A ruckus broke out at a government school in the Araria district of Bihar after a snake was found in the Khichdi served to students under the mid-day meal scheme.

Reports said the incident occurred on Saturday at Amouna middle school Ward No. 21, under Jogbani Nagar Parishad and landed as many as 100 students in the hospital. Officials said the affected students are undergoing treatment and are out of danger.

Reports further said students were served khichdi prepared by an NGO during the mid-day meal and the students who already ate the food ended up barfing following which they were rushed to the Forbesganj hospital.

Araria district education office Rajkumar said all the students who ate the food are safe and an investigation has been launched into the matter.

DEO Rajkumar also said the NGO, which was assigned for the mid-day meals in the school, will face the cancellation of their license.

The school authorities noticed the dead snake after a student pointed it out and informed everyone. However, about 100 students had eaten the meal till then.

Reports said school teachers complained several times to the NGO about the bad quality of mid-day meals they have been serving to the students, however, their complaint was neglected.

This is not the first mid-day meal mishap reported in Bihar. In November 2022, as many as 200 students were hospitalised after eating mid-day meals at a middle school in Naugachhia in Bhagalpur.

In a case of absolute negligence, a snake was found in the mid-day meal in the primary school of West Bengal’s Birbhum. Around 30 students became ill after eating food that allegedly contained a snake and was served to children at a primary school in Mayureswar block. The incident happened at Mandalpur Primary School.

A school staffer who cooked the meal also claimed that a snake was found in one container containing the lentils. According to the officials, around 20 students out of the total 53 students present in the school ate the mid-day meal. Students were immediately rushed to Rampurhat Medical College after they fell ill.

P Nayek, Chairman of the District Primary School Council, stated that he went to the hospital and spoke with the parents of the children. He added that the students are doing fine now and are out of danger.

Block Development Officer Dipanjan Jana also said that they have been receiving complaints from several villagers about children falling sick after eating the mid-day meal.

This is not the first time a reptile has been discovered in the students’ midday meal. Earlier, a dead lizard and rat were also found in the midday meal, said Malda District Magistrate Nitin Singhania. He said strict action would be taken against those responsible for it.

One of the residents told that the quality of the mid-day meal provided in the school is terrible. Students have been complaining about it for a long time and today we caught them red-handed.

A blood boiling story has come to light from Uttar Pradesh Mahoba where a few schoolgirls who had consumed a mid day meal in school fell ill on Monday. According to reports, 15 school girls fell victim to the poor food quality.

After the school girls complained of problems, the school authorities turned to the help of tantrik, instead of seeking help of a doctor to help the ailing girls. According to reports, the tantrik continued to treat and perform exorcism for almost two hours.

The video of the incident was also captured in which a tantrik can be seen grabbing one of the school girl by her hair and shaking her head back and forth. The tantrik can also be seen screaming at the school girl.

The video also shows the girl crying out of pain and wailing as the crowd surrounds her and adds on to the tantrik’s exorcism. A man can also be seen holding the girl back while the tantrik teated the girl in a very brash manner.

Villagers views

According to reports, the villagers believe that the school was haunted by ghosts and the reason for the girls to fall ill was due to this reason only.

Authorities action

After the video of the incident went viral, the authorities and the senior district and police official rushed to the hospital. According to reports, the police also forced away the tantrik from the school premise and the students were rushed to a local community health center.

The SDM of Kulhapur, Arun Dikshit stated that the incident is being further investigated and the sample of the mid-day meal was sent for inspection to investigate the matter further. The police official further added that the girls were all between 9 to 13 years old.

A lizard was reportedly found in the mid-day meal of school students in Bihar’s Madhubani district and some students fell ill and were admitted to a local hospital. The incident took place on Friday.

The school students claimed that the lizard was found in the vegetables of the meal. They also said that their teacher threaten them with dire consequences if anything was revealed in this matter. Later, the teacher gave Avil’s tablets to sick students.

Reports said that the administration tried to hide this incident. The villagers were demanding action against the teacher.

Notably, this is not the first incident of mid-day meal mismanagement. Recently, around 50 students fell ill after eating a mid-day meal at the Kasiyauna Utkramit Madhya Vidyalaya (Middle School) of Rajnagar block in the Madhubani district. They were admitted to a Community Health Centre. After an investigation, a lizard was found in the meal.

In a similar incident, at least 80 students fell sick after having a mid-day meal in the Haveri district of Karnataka. They were admitted to a government hospital and were discharged after treatment. Reports said that a dead lizard was found in the meal. The district administration directed authorities to take action against the teachers.

Mismanagement in the mid-day meal was also reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district. After consuming the mid-day meal, all 30 students fell ill and were admitted to a hospital. They were released after treatment. The principal was suspended and two cooks were removed after this incident.

Basic Siksha Adhikar Shubham Shukla said that the school principal was suspended and two cooks were removed after this incident. All 30 admitted students were released from the hospital.

Shubham Shukla said that he ordered an investigation into this matter. A three-member inquiry committee was also formed for this purpose.

In Chhattisgarh’s Durg district, 28 students in a government primary school fell ill after having ‘chikki’, a sweet snack, which was being distributed as a part of the Mid-day meal scheme. The children were immediately admitted to the hospital where they were kept under observation for some time before being discharged. The incident took place on Wednesday in Koliyapuri village.

District Education Officer (DEO) Pravas Singh Baghel said that soya made chikki were offered to at least 137 students of Classes I to V and out of the 28, belonging to Grades 3 and 4, later complained of abdominal pain and vomiting.

The doctor said that after a preliminary medical assessment, 20 of the 28 students were discharged, while the others were kept under observation for a bit before being sent home. Now, the health condition of all the students is normal.

According to an official statement, a preliminary report by the Block Education Officer on the issue suggested that the children were given chikki in excess, which caused the illness.

According to the statement, samples of chikki provided by the state’s seed corporation, on the other hand, have been sent to a laboratory for testing. Meanwhile, Home Minister Tamradhwaj Sahu, who visited the hospital to inquire about the students’ conditions, said that an investigation into the incident has been ordered and that further action will be taken after the report is received.

This is not the first time that the students have fallen ill and are hospitalized due to the meal served in the government school. Earlier, a class 6 student died and over 60 children were hospitalised allegedly after eating mid-day meal at a government middle school in Nawadih village in Koderma district.

Students of a girls’ school in Faridabad of Haryana were shocked to find a snake in their midday meal on Thursday. Although the food had smelled “stale”, some in the school had already consumed it before the reptile was discovered in the meal. Authorities of Rajkeeya Girls Senior Secondary School stopped serving the meal immediately and informed the police.

Some students and faculty members who had consumed the meal had vomited. Two teachers and six students who felt nauseous, were taken to hospital and discharged later.

Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow has formed a committee, headed by Faridabad Tehsildar, to conduct an examination of the kitchen and submit a report. Reports say one more committee was constituted to investigate the incident which will be led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner.

The school principal Brij Bala has alerted the Iskcon food relief foundation, responsible for providing the meal as well as higher authorities.
