Jail authorities have recovered more than 340 mobile phones in jails across the national capital during the last two-and-a-half months, a senior official said on Thursday.

In a statement issued to the media, Director General (Prisons) (DG) Sanjay Baniwal revealed that the jail authorities found 348 mobile phones in two-and-a-half months. Baniwal said that the jail authorities conducted a raid in jail number 3 and seized 18 mobile phones and chargers, adding that 348 mobile phones have been seized over the last two months.

The officer said that jail superintendents have developed strong intelligence in the prisons and started conducting raids to send the criminal world a strong message.

The DG said that the authorities have set 23 targets for 2023, among them is making jails completely phone free and setting up problem redressal system for the inmates. He added that jammers will be inside the premises so that using a phone inside prisons would become impossible.

On the alleged involvement of insiders who help procure mobile phones for inmates and smuggle them inside the jail premises, Baniwal admitted the involvement of the prison staff in the act, promising that stringent action will be taken against those found guilty.
