Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday has inaugurated 11 new government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu through a video conference. Apart from the government medical colleges, PM also has inaugurated a new campus of the Central Institute of Classical in the state.

The new government medical colleges will be inaugurated in the state districts that include Namakkal, Virudhunagar, Tiruppur, Nilgiris, Nagapattinam, Thiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Ariyalur, and Krishnagiri.

These projects have been established under the budget of Rs 4,000 crore, in which Rs 2,145 crore have been funded by the central government and the remaining amount is founded by the Tamil Nadu government.

This comes ahead of the assembly elections which are due in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Punja, Manipur, and Goa next month (February 10, 2022).

According to the PMO, after the inauguration of these new government and private medical colleges, the state now has increased the total of government and private medical colleges from 387 to 596.  PMO also revealed that the MBBS seats in the medical college in the state have been increased by 79.60 percent (from 51,348 seats to 92,222 seats) and the number of Postgraduation seats has been increased by 80.70 percent (from 31,185 seats to 56,374 seats).

As per the official information, these newly inaugurated medical colleges will have a total capacity of 1,450 seats. During the video press conference, PM said, it will improve the health infrastructure in the state and it will provide great benefits to the people living there. During his video press conference, PM said he envisions India to be a go-to place for quality and affordable healthcare.

During the video conference, PM Modi also revealed that over the last 7 years, the country’s medical colleges number has increased and gone up to 596, from 387 since his government came into power in 2014.  As per the PM’s speech, the number of AIIMS also has increased by 22 in the county.
