The Home Ministry on Monday denied freezing of any bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and said the government did not freeze any bank accounts operated by the Kolkata-based organization.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that MHA did not freeze any accounts of Missionaries of Charity. The organization had itself written to the State Bank of India asking for its accounts to be suspended, the ministry said. However, the officials at the Missionaries of Charity have refused to comment.

Union Ministry also said the organization had refused to renew the organization’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license on December 25 after being made aware of adverse inputs. The FCRA registration of Missionaries of Charity was valid up to December 31, 2021 so that the renewal application of Missionaries of Charity was not approved, the ministry said.

Earlier today, a controversy was erupted after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted that the government had frozen Missionaries of Charity’s bank accounts. In her tweet, she expressed shock at reports and said on the occasion of Christmas, Union Ministry froze all banks accounts of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and 22,000 patients and employees have been left without food and medicines.

The Missionaries of Charity was founded in 1950 by the late Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who lived and worked in Kolkata for most of her life and won the Nobel Peace Prize, denied all charges.

Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday shared a tweet, in which she said that she is shocked to hear that on the occasion of Christmas, the Union Ministry froze all bank accounts of Mother Teresa’s missionaries of charity across India.

She further said that the law is paramount, but humanitarian efforts must not be compromised. TMC supremo also highlighted that as the accounts have been frozen, 22,000 patients and employees have now been left without food and medicines.

The reason behind the alleged account frozen is yet unknown.

Meanwhile, this month news agency AFP reported that the Gujarat police was investigating if the missionaries in the charity house have forced girls to wear a red cross and read the bible. Mayank Trivedi, district social officer told AFP that the police complaint was based on a report by child welfare authorities.

In the complaint, it was mentioned that 13 Bibles were found in a library and girls who were staying there were forced to read the religious text.

Mother Teresa died in September 1997 and was accorded a state funeral for her service to the poor, irrespective of caste and creed. In September 2016 she was elevated to sainthood by Pope Francis.

I solicit that the privileged should listen to the voice of the disadvantaged, for, a privileged person without mercy, is an awful philistine.”

International Day of Peace aka World Peace Day is observed every year on September 21 to strengthen peace across nations by observing 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire.

The United Nations first observed World Peace Day in 1981 while the date to celebrate the day was eventually changed to September 21 in 2002.

The day is also a reminder for the people of all nations to think about universal peace.

The definition of peace is commonly associated with non-violence but it actually goes beyond efforts taken by people to make the world a better place.

The Nobel Peace Prize is the most well-known award given internationally to the people who have contributed to bring peace across the nations.

Over the years, many have worked towards bringing peace through different means.

On the occasion of World Peace Day, here is a look back at Indians who won Nobel Peace Prize.

Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, an Indian nun born in Macedonia, had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work with the poor and downtrodden, especially in Calcutta. Despite cashing the prize money, she donated it to the poor.

The award was given for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress in the world, which also constitute a threat to peace according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

She founded the religious congregation, Missionaries of Charity, in Calcutta in 1950 and worked with it till her death in 1997 in the same city.

Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama had won Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, ten years after Mother Teresa. The Dalai Lama was born in Tibet’s Taktser but has been a resident of India since his exile in 1959. He arrived in Mussoorie first, before making Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh his home. The world has acknowledged his efforts to bring Tibetan free from China through non-violence.

Kailash Satyarthi

In 2014, Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian social reformer won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, for his efforts to protect children from child labour and help them get an education.

Over 41 years, he has been involved in various initiatives, starting with the Bachpan Bachao Andolan in 1980, which works towards building a child-free society by providing free education.

Notably, Mahatma Gandhi was nominated five times for this award in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and 1948 but did not receive it till the end.
