[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Five people lost their lives after a major fire broke out in a high-rise residential building yesterday (Thursday, Dec 27) evening in Chembur, one of Mumbai‘s largest suburbs.

The fire erupted on the 11th floor of building number 35 in the B wing of Sargam Society. The housing society is near Ganesh Garden in Tilak Nagar.

The fire was reported at 7.45 pm and 15 firefighting vehicles rushed to the spot. The fire is now under control.

According to the disaster management cell, the fire was reported on the 10th floor of the 16-storey building and later spread to other floors. Prima facie fire brigade officials are suspecting short circuit as the cause of the fire. Officials said initially, the fire was minor but later it escalated to a Level 3 (major) fire as it spread.

Five senior residents of the building were taken to the hospital, but died on the way. Another elderly citizen has been admitted to a hospital due to suffocation. One fireman has also been admitted to the hospital. He is reportedly stable.

An LPG cylinder blast reportedly increased the severity of the fire. The firefighting equipment of the building was also reportedly non-functional. Also, double parking (by residents) on the road delayed fire brigade vehicles from reaching the spot.

The victims have been identified as Sunita Joshi, 72, Bhalchandra Joshi, 72 and Suman Shrinivas Joshi, 83, Sarala Suresh Gangar, 52 and Laxmiben Premji Gangar, 83.

Last week, a major fire broke out at a luxury showroom adjoining the 5-star Trident Hotel at Mumbai’s Nariman Point.

The exact cause of the fire is not known, a probe is being conducted to enquire off the incident.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The main cause of the fire is still unknown.

This is the second fire incident after the government-run Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital was devastated by a blaze that claimed nine lives and resulted in injuries to 173 people, mostly patients and employees, on Monday evening.  Around 25 are still critical in various suburban hospitals.
