This day is lined with various other programmes of the government such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl Child, free women education, and reservation of women in various educational institutions.

The aim of this day is to create awareness about the rights of the girl child, the importance of girl education, and the health of girl child. National Girl Child Day is being celebrated today across the country to highlight and create awareness about the rights of girl child and to provide them with new opportunities.

Ministry of Women and Child Development will be observing National Girl Child week from January 24 to January 30. Various competitions such as poster making, slogan writing, street play will be organized in various schools and universities across the country.

The National Girl Child Day which was first celebrated in 2008 has been used effectively as a tool to educate the mass about the inequalities faced by the girl child in India and promotes their welfare in various aspects.

The objectives of the National Girl Child Day are:

  • To highlight the inequalities faced by girls in the country
  • To promote awareness about the rights of the girl child
  • To generate awareness on the importance of girl education, health and nutrition.

As per the Census 2011, the child sex ratio (0-6 years) has shown a decline from 927 females per thousand males in 2001 to 919 females per thousand males in 2011.
