Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed the Centre over a report on rise in unemployment in August, saying the Central government is harmful for employment. Gandhi was referring to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) report which highlighted that the national unemployment rate in August jumped to 8.32 per cent from 6.96 per cent in July.

Tagging a snapshot of the report on Twitter, Gandhi said Modi government is harmful for employment. They do not promote or support any kind of ‘friendless’ business or employment… and are trying to snatch away jobs those who have it.  A pretense of self-reliance is expected from the countrymen. The CMIE report suggested that the Urban unemployment rose to 9.78 per cent in August from 8.3 per cent in July and 10.07 per cent in June 2021. Rural unemployment also jumped to 7.64 per cent in August from 6.34 per cent in July, primarily due to low sowing during the kharif season.

At least eight states across the country including Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, are still reporting double-digit unemployment rates. At 35.7 per cent, Haryana had the highest unemployment rate in August, followed by Rajasthan at 26.7 per cent, Jharkhand at 16 per cent, Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir each at 13.6 per cent. Rahul Gandhi had been critical of the government over its economic policies including including the National Monetization Pipeline (NMP) plan announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. He has been flagging concerns of job losses, demanding corrective measures to boost employment. However, the government has dismissed the opposition party’s criticism and rebutted all allegations.

Meanwhile, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday targeted the central government over the National Monetization Pipeline, saying that the Narendra Modi government should inform the countrymen about the objective of this move.
